Rather than mention here who I might have spotted on the road - I am astonished at how few MK2 & Mk2f's I've seen out and about in the last few months. I've done 15,000 miles since February this year and I've seen only 3 other pre and post facelift MK2's. I live in Shropshire near the Welsh border but travel all around the country in mine. Are figures available of how many of these are still in existence? I know they quote the Land Rover Defender and its predecessor's as having the highest ratio of vehicles made that still exist - if they know this where do they get the figures from?

Just curious about this and observations from others.

Haven't seen a MkI on the road since I was a lad.

Usually see a MkII every month, followed a lovely black coupe s for a few miles last month.

Probably see a MkIII coupe every week/fortnight. breadvans seem scarcer and never see loons any more.

Found a bloke just round the corner with MkII van the other day which was a nice find.

Do G40s really exist or are they tucked away and never driven as I've never seen one.

Its funny because there still are lots of Mk2Fs here in Portugal. Mainly diesel versions and the mighty 1.0, and still quite a few vans.

G40s are somewhat rare, but I still see one like every month or so. Lots of them being sold online...amazing how many tbf.

An old lady who lives a street below mine still owns a black Mk2 GT, from 1989 I think.

Never EVER saw a Mk1. Me thinks they were never sold in Portugal.

Thanks Both - that link you gave GT Breadvan Man is superb - I never knew it existed - absolutely fascinating - I got the stats for just the Polo Fox - 13K of them in 1995 - now some 523 - and these are a quarter of of the numbers from 5 years ago. The distribution curve they provide as well is very interesting. So if you've still got one on the road or even on bricks, it's now rarer and more special than ever.

I have seen quite a few mk3 polos about since the summer and a few mk2s but I've noticed that there are not many g40 s for sale.

pretty rare around here now , see the odd mk2f once in a while

you say theres some in portugal , i find alot of other countrys people are happy to use older cars but here in the uk people would rather be in debt and try to impress each other with fancy new cars

Mk2s are alive and well in my town

I know of 4 that are on the road and another 4 laid up!

That also happens around here. I should add that most Mk2fs I see here are merely commutes. There are a few nicely taken care of, but kept most of their lives on a garage. I've seen my 91 GT and it was once again neglected :/

Thats whats cool about owning a stock look G40. Its nice to leave people behind at the lights with their newer "cooler" cars... Yes I'm one of those I'm afraid

I find that website quite hard to use. I want to know how many mk1's are left in total but I don't know all the trim levels :(

Polo (ie base spec), N, L, LS, GLS think that's it as we never got the S or the GT over here as far as I know.

Spotted a Mk1 left hand drive in St Helier. Amazing paint job with large number 4 on door and bonnet.

I've got one of them on my dashboard.

Affordable and definitely no rust in that model..

Saw a black 1988 breadvan at the MoT garage the other day. Totally original but a bit rough, for sale incidentally..

Otherwise, well culled off. Not financially viable. There's one in my breakers, was a members on here, it's in the gallery but is well stripped now. I had the front struts off it..

Still see the odd Mk 2 on the road. Saw a silver one motoring stongly from Trevor towards Llangollen as i was going to Wrexham about three weeks ago, and i often see a blue '83 'Y' reg Mk 2 saloon in Llangollen driven by a chap who is even older than me!

Saw two or three around Bala during the summer, so they are still about.

Well, about that MKI here in Portugal...

There it is, the only I've ever seen. It belongs to an old lady and isn't in the best conditions, but it's not bad too.

It's a GLS version, 08/1982, via new license plates. (I love the color!)

Still a few about here, I've only seen 1 mk1 on the road, that was in Northampton, blue I think, low on some ATS classics? Was around a year and a half back!

I was having a think about this earlier and I think it could be a sign that mk2's have probably finally made the jump from old wrecks to classic cars.

I don't know if it's fear of rust, the fact you can't get any part or panel you need from any scrapyard for a tenner, my acceptance of the shit my work vehicle has to endure, or just me getting old, but, much as I love them, I've finally reached the point where I wouldn't want to use a mk2 as a daily hack anymore :unsure:

I use mine as a daily and I love it :) I would say there deffo now a classic you just never see them any more

Well there is 272 Mk2 build threads on here. Some of those cars have probley been scrapped now mind

Try howmanyleft, you'll have to enter all the different models but it'll give you an answer!
