Any merit to a genuine alternator belt?..trivial I know but read on please..

It's a for '91 Gt. I know they're not hugely expensive either way but it's the extra leg work I'd have to put in to get a genuine one as my local motor factor is round the corner the VW place is about 7 miles.
The reason I ask is I had problems getting the tension right on the last on (GSF). It would either squeal (too loose) or whine (too tight). There was no happy medium with it. As a result it hasn't lasted very long at all

That could be a possibility as the tensioning ratchet thingy is right near the end of the run, only maybe 10mm length to go if you know what I mean? Have just been told there are 3 lengths to choose from; 675mm, 700mm and 710mm. You wouldn't happen to know would you?
