My Little Red Auto

Featured Replies

Bought myself a Polo 6n in September 13, nippy little car, it's definetly a love hate car. I only drive automatics due to medical conditions, as most are aware motoring costs are not what they used to be, this car fills the gap preety well.

Couple of things since day one:

1) Knocking noise from front passenger wheel, squeaks when driving slowly gets louder when driving straight and turning right, turning left makes no noise, suspected wheel bearing or poor alignment open to suggestions.
2) Car switching off when in D and in slow traffic/junction, sometimes struggles to turn back on.
3) Very shaky engine, I might be running on 3 cyclinders, started the engine, took off leads one by one, plug 3 made no difference plug 1,2,4 shut the engine down completely, there is a current on lead 3 but have noticed it doesn't clip onto the spark plug
4) The de mist barely works, any tips?
5) The speedometer goes all haywire on wet days, normally around the time the engine switches off
6) The idle drops from 900 to 700 and jolts back up to 900
7) Classic signs of rusting

Other than that it's a decent car lol, couple of dents on the rear bumper panel and front bumper panel, rear passenger door and front driver side wing, the last owner was a 17 year old, who fitted incorrect tyres, I don't think It's been serviced for a very long time.

The only decent picture I have is this one,

The last car I did a project on was my Astra MK4 also in red

Since buying the Polo I though I wasn't going to keep it long term, didn't want to start doing anything to it, but my situation leaves me to stay with it, being a car enthusiat I could only hold myself back for so long!!

All I've done so far is replace couple of bulbs,

My plans for the next two months are:

1) Replace Drivers Side Headlamp x1
2) Front Clear Indicator Lamps x2
3) Side Clear Indicator Lamps x2
4) Bonnet bra to cover up the rusting bonnet x1
5) Pressed plates front & back (MOT advisory need replacing, why not go pressed?)
6) I plan to keep my 13'' steelies will be refurbing them & painting them white
7) Dark GTI rear lights x2
8 ) GTI Numberplate holders x2
9) Osram Nightbreaker Plus bulbs x2
10) GTI tyre valve caps x4

11) Wind Deflectors x4
12) Thermostat housing, Ignition leads & Lambda sensor will be replaced
13) New Front Disc & Pads
14) Minor Service oil, filters etc

Finally can I just say, there are some AMAZING 6n's on this site I have been admiring for quite some time now. I'm in Northolt London Anyone in the Northolt, Greenford, Southall, Hounslow area want to give me some tips feel free.

Also picked up the White Enamel Spray Cans from Halfords for the wheels & some Satin Black for the Grille/Boot Badge, also from Halfords. Weather is awful so won't be able to paint until it clears up.

Tried to remove my grill the other day but I'm not great at this stuff so Haynes manual it is

Interested in seeing the grill done, so I know how to do it when it comes to mine

Where did you find clear lens' been looking for some

Smoked 16v ones on!! Camera does not do justice, but they are much darker in person, and look sexy on red imo.

I forgot to mention I have transfered my CREE LED reverse bulbs over, didn't even realise the Polo had only one. Atleast I have a spare now. Brighter than leds & smds, unlike them, these produce a beam!

Update:

*Clear side indicators were a flop, I ordered the wrong ones, they were for mk3 golf etc, delayed with that now :(

*Decided to paint the Grille badge white instead of black, don't want too much black once the bra is on, hopefully it will compliment the white wheels (once I paint them)

Clear Front Lamps with Amber Bulbs. Turns out Chrome Tinted bulbs aren't as bright as I thought, good for styling but not very safe from a distance in this weather.

Also changed Oil, Oil filter, we had a problem with the Thermostat housing O-Ring/Seal, couldn't redeem the old one and the new one was the wrong size, being a Sunday no local part shop was open now I can't put antifreeze in!!!!!! :( So car is now sitting at my friends until I get a new seal.

How I left her tonight:

046_zpsc78d314f.jpg

Bonnet bra needs some adjusting.

Swear people don't realize these have pollen filters don't think mine had been changed since the day it left the factory it was a state!

I like that bright reverse light! where you get it from?

Starting to look very tidy, and doing it the right way, sorting the problems/imperfections first!

Could i please have a link for that dual usb lighter port? guessing you bought it online but could be jumping to conclusions

Cheers, Ollie

That filter was dirty as hell ! Black, mucky, and filled with damp, as for the reverse bulbs, I have an older versions of them, they don't sell them anymore (assumed) however you can buy the newer ones from eBay, search for 'P21W White CREE' and there's a huge selection of newer ones, be sure to buy as a pair as single bulbs might set you back more. Just double check they're single contact bulbs and not double as they will short your wires out.

Last shot of her until I paint the wheels, still a long time until the weather clears up. Will be taking a break from the car as we're still decorating the home and preparing for my third child. Thank you for viewing my project, feel free to comment and ask any questions.

Really? Guess I'll be taking it off very soon, thought I'd try the bonnet bra look and honestly I feel like a idiot driving around with it.

they serve a purpose for show cars, you put it on drive to the show and take it off without stone chipping the car on the way. if you leave them on they collect grit and moisture and you'll scratch th bonnet up taking it off

Ahh that makes sense, I see what you mean about the damage, only minimal so far being on for two days, so colour has pinked, there was a lot of rain water in there. Binned that sob now lol
