Hey guys,

Finally decided to knuckle down and make a build thread! Just after purchasing a standard 2000 Silver 1.4 Mpi 3 door 6n2, which gives me the perfect excuse to have a bit of fun.

Car is in quite good condition, running perfectly and is actually a pleasure to drive (we'll see how long that lasts once the coilovers go in.. )

Although everything is running smoothly, there are a few cosmetic problems (they may be small, but they still p**s me the f**k off) that will need to be sorted ASAP.

So here she is, as she stands just after purchase.

Bought it off an old couple, so came equipped with the highest spec of creepy Christian stickers

Wee bit of frontal bump strip damage aswell ,

Top of the range headunit to say the least ..

I'd say the window switches have seen better days

How does that even happen ?

And to top it all off they left me a few ashes still in the ash tray for good luck..

But aside from those slight cosmetic downfalls shes A-OK !

Only became a member of Club Polo recently, although have been sourcing information and tips from here for the best part of a year. Been meaning to make a build thread like this for quite a while now so I'v got loads in store for ye !

This is all I've got for now though, as I just bought the car yesterday

The build will start ASAP , with Christmas coming up and the weather acting the c**t it will be slow to start but once things calm down and dry up (fingers crossed) work will begin !

god knows how you'd break the speaker grill, they're quite tough! That window switch is in good condition especially if it works, you'll find out what I mean when the windows stick open when it snows

Tidy base, older cars will always have few wear and tear bits that need doing but if it's good otherwise I wouldn't worry too much just do them as you go along

Due to it feeling about -200 degrees outside and the loss of light, unfortunatly I cant get started on anything yet. Saying this, it gives me a bit of time to prep for tomorrow!

I plan on installing the majority of the wiring for the cars audio tomorrow, providing the rain holds off. Basically the plan is to move this lot off my couch .. and into the car

i think i can shed some light on the breaking of the speaker grille. i think they were a horny old couple and she (or he...) put an 8 inch heel through the grille while changing position in a poorly lit carpark. dogging is the only logical answer!

looks like a good base though man! any plans for it?

Good base for a project this. As has been said all cars come with a few faults.

Looks alot worse in person, you can barely see it in the photo, but nothing a bit of rubbing compound wont fix

But I can tell you that shes going to be a quick paced build as I've been planning,saving and ordering for quite a while now. I plan on doing it, and doing it right (whatever 'right' might be hah)

Have to make a trip up to Halfrauds in the morning to pick up some wire connectors and s**t and then i'l be getting cracking on the audio setup provided the rain holds off !

Okay , so just a quick update with todays progress as I have to be in work in half an hour ..

I battled the elements and managed to get the majority of the wiring installed in the car !

Spent quite a bit trying to get these b*****ds through the firewall .. along with painfully wedging my hand up the passengers footwell ...

But in the end the ol' coathanger came into play and I managed to feed them through.

By the way today has also made me realise how much I f**king HATE wiring.

Unfortunately I didnt have time to run all of it to the boot , so its just going to have to stay in the footwells until tomorrow when Il begin installing the mammoth headunit (gonna be some fun ._.) and hopefully get the amp and sub up and going.

Anyways, I must go now .. underpaid labour awaits.

Is it an awkward job ? Luckily I don't have to worry about that yet though, haven't actually gotten around to buying any aftermarket speakers for the front of the car, so i'm stuck with stock for the moment unfortunatly. The ones i'm installing currently are two 6X9s in the parcel shelf and a sub in the boot.. so not too tricky But I will get around to upgrading the front soon enough

So progress has been kinda slower than I hoped with this whole Christmas thing going on.. although managed to get a bit done with the audio install, but everythings still not up and running yet.

Firstly, out with the old, double din with the new ... see what I did there

Well aside from terrible puns this headunit was a motherb***h to fit. The wiring alone was a handful, but then trying to fit the unit in to sit somewhat flush with the dash was a nightmare . Finally after what seemed like a eternity of cutting plastic from inside the dash and wedging wires into crevasses I managed to get it to a point I was happy with. With everything fitted nicely I started it up and what can I say , serious bit of kit for the price !

Head-unit has a 7 inch screen and plays Radio, CDs and DVDs (in much better quality than I expected) , takes a SD card, AUX, and has two memory stick ports. Also has a built in GPS, which upon purchase I expected to be faulty and s**t, but it actually works.. and well! And to top it off you can watch TV on it ! , but unfortunatly there is no more free-view digital in Ireland , so that isn't an option for me

But other than that I would seriously recommend this head unit to anyone who is thinking about upgrading to a double din ! Its called the ' Erisin ES996D ' for anyone that might be interested.. heres an ol' link.

If you contact a sales assistant on the website (they have a live chat help service) , they should give you a better price than is stated on the site !

Just a wee snap of the GPS receiver, nice and tidy to say the least ! , still not sure where i'm going to mount it though.

And now moving to the boot. Everythings kinda in a mess at the moment, wires absolutly everywhere.. but once everything is hooked up and running il begin tidying up the wires and securing down the amp and sub. Iv stuck two 6X9s in the parcelshelf, which are being powered by a 2-channel Pioneer amplifier. Also have a Edge subwoofer , but unfortunatly, until all the wirings done and dusted, I wont be able to get an idea of the power and quality of the speakers, so i'l fill ye in in my next update!

Anyways thats all iv got for now .. took time out of my night to write this.. now thats dedication! haha Anywayyy back on the beer !

Made a small bit of progress today, managed to get the last of the wiring sorted and have everything up and running. Only problem is that the car is still a jungle of wires and tools, so objective for tomorrow is to clean that b***h up and discretely tuck away all the wiring.

Other than that, the speakers and sub are sounding sweet, very happy with them Sound quality is near perfect, and stays consistent while raising the volume, which is exactly what you want

Now all thats left audio-wise is to secure down the amp and sub, although I need to get my hands on a bit of wood to act as a floor for the boot. This way, i'll have something sturdy to support the sub and amp and also to secure them down to, as the thin carpet floor in the boot at the moment is caving in with all the weight I'll also, at some stage, upgrade the front speakers, although right about now i've had enough of wiring and the stock speakers will do for the time being

I've also made the decision that a few parts of the body are going to be replaced. This is due to noticing, after a closer inspection of the body of the car, that there are a few more cosmetic problems than I first thought.

Basicly there are marks on either corner of both the front and back bumpers. The paint is also peeling on the sill of the rear bumper just below the tailgate and on the bumpstrip of the front bumper. Aswell as this , after removing the front licence plate, I found that whoever had drilled them in had made quite a balls of a job , with 3 holes either side. The paint was also considerably rust stained and cracking quite badly.

Noooowww , you might think I'm crazy spending money on replacement body-parts because of these small bits and pieces .. but luckily, I actually have the luxury of knowing another silver 6n2, in very good condition .. same paint code and the whole lot, which I can source the parts I need at a very low cost! That means a new tailgate and bumpers for me!

Also will be ordering the coilovers ASAP. Hopefully they wont be too long arriving as I cant wait to get them in!

Unfortunatly at the moment my biggest problem in the c**tish weather. Windy, rainy, and cold .. all day .. everyday ... and as I dont have a garage to work out of, I have to battle the elements, which means progress is quite slower right now than I had planned . Picked the perfect time to start working on the car anyway

On the bright side, i've got a friend whos offered to let me work in his garage for a few days, so will be getting started fitting my new bumpers and tailgate tomorrow !

Got a good bit done today, managed to remove my front and rear bumpers and fit the new ones! Also got time along the way to fit a few other bits and pieces that I had picked up

Really happy with how the bumpers are looking now! Theres still a few bits and pieces which could do with touching up, but overall they are in much better condition than the bumpers that came on the car. Job itself wasnt to hard, toughest bit overall was aligning the bumpers to sit right when putting them on, other than that it was just loosening and tightening torque screws. I also apologize for the poor picture quality, lighting wasnt really good for photos.

Just a quick snap before removing the front bumper, with grille, indicators and torque screws out. Lookin' kinda futuristic if you ask me ..

Came across this while removing torques from the drivers side rear arch, was planning on putting her through NCT before I put the coilovers in .. but no point now as theres not a hope she'll get through with this ! Just gonna have to stick the coilies in when i get 'em and put her through NCT afterwards.

I found these to be a rare enough bit of kit to find new, finally managed to pick them off out of a breakers yard, second hand .. but cheap as f**k !

Picked this up off Ebay for a few quid, not a big mod .. but does look alot better than the stock one.

Silvatecs

Picked these up in Halfrauds and as usual were seriously over-priced

Also decided to remove this ugly piece of s**t .

Why someone would even consider putting this on their car is beyond me .. anyway, we made sure the little c**t couldn't hurt anyone ever again ..

With the dirtywork over and done with we got cracking on fitting the new bumpers ..

And theres nothin' like a good cuppa tae when the jobs all done !

With everything fitted she looked like a different car , GTI grille really does wonders ! hah

Will be making my way down to Volkswagen ASAP to order myseff a GTI front splitter, at €80 its quite steep, but I think it will really set off the front end.

I also plan on sticking with no licence plate on the front. Hopefully will get the screw holes from the previous licence plate filled in and would also like to get the licence plate indentation on the bump-strip filled, smoothed and painted.

Plans for tomorrow are to install a few more bits and pieces I have picked up, and to place the order for my coilovers!

Hopefully they'll be here by the end of the week and I can get cracking on the install next weekend !

Iv also got my eyes on some wheels, although I dont want to spoil the surprise so I'm gonna keep my mouth shut

So today I got around to replacing my headlights. Went out to the garage thinking it would be an easy half hour job .. but f**k me I couldnt of been more wrong. Also swapped the stock light-switch with a new light-switch I picked up, which controls the fogs I installed yesterday!

I don't know why, I probably just didn't think it through, but I assumed that all id have to do to replace the headlights was undo a few torques, pull 'em out, throw in the new ones, tighten everything back up and be home in time for dinner. Essentially that is all I had to do .. but i didn't expect i'd have to remove my bumper .. again .. (could of just done all this yesterday when the bumper was off) .. and then cut the living s**t out of the front of my car with a hack-saw ..

But f**kit, I got it done .. it all works .. and it looks f**king sweet.

I also forgot to mention yesterday that one of the wheels on the car got a puncture somehow .. great I know .. Anyway, we replaced the wheel yesterday with a spare that was lying around the garage, just for the time being so that we could move the car about if needed. Slapped it on and everything was sweeet !! .. Until we jacked it up today and tried to get it off .. Was not budging.

Pulled it, pushed it, kicked it, spun it, shimeyd it, hammered it, f**k I even spat on it ... and it still wasn't coming off.

Anyway, after all our b*tchy efforts we decided to bring out the big guns.

Just laid into the c**t with this baby and it just popped off, wasnt so tough now was it ... This also concretes my theory that if at first you don't succeed , smash the f**king s**t out of it with a sledgehammer.

Anyway, with the wheel finally off I threw on my spare and got down to work.

Firstly the front bumper had to come off to get access to the torques for the headlights. At first I thought id get away with just taking it half off but I wasnt that lucky ..

Snap with both headlights removed .. looks f**kin' evil if you ask me ..

Next up was fitting these babies. Genuine Xenon GTI headlights, picked them up off a lad who was breaking his GTI. Payed quite a bit for them , but definatly not as much as VW was charging for a new pair . Although they're second hand they're actually in great condition!! also came with white LED sidelights, so saved me another few quid!

Okay so here is where I got stumped. Tried fitting the lights, but there was no room for the ballasts .. after a few minutes of contemplation I had an epiphany, whipped out the hacksaw and was stumped no more. I'll let the photos do the talking ..

Yes I know it looks like I cut it with a potato .. yes I know a parkisons ridden pensioner could of done a better job.. but at that stage I could barely feel my hands with the cold and quite frankly did not give a f**k.

Anyway they fitted and they fitted well, and thats all that matters in the end of the day

With both headlights fitted I think the front end is beginning to look quite fresh! Taking a trip down to VW tomorrow to order my front splitter which will be the icing on top of the cake! While down there I might order a pair of indicators as the ones on the car at the moment aren't in the best condition.

Lastly I fitted the new light switch and started her up to make sure all the lights were working.

With everything functioning correctly I called it a day.

And I think I need to call it a day at this stage too .. sleep is needed.
