I'm going to purchase a set of golf mk4 gt alloys. Tried them on today when on full lock to the right the tyres catches in inside of the wheel arch. The wheels are on 205/55/16 tyres.

Can i over come this problem by fitting 195/55/16 tyres on the alloys?

The rim diameter is 6.5j how would fitting a thinner tyre affect the car? I've heard about speedos being inaccurate etc.

you would be 5.5% smaller, an indicated 70 would be 66.47mph

Ok so the indicated speed is about 3.5mph off which I'm guessing isn't too bad.

Do you have any idea whether the thinner tyre may solve my scraping the inside of the arches issue?

what car is it going on? i had 195/45/15 on my mk2f and it rubbed at times. my rims are 15" 6.5j

9n3 mate. Thinner tyre or spacers seem like my options not sure if spacers will do the job? Gonna keep the back 2 tyres as 205/55's just need to sort these fronts.

What's the standard tyre size on a 9n?

Yeah that would be 4.3mm different on diameter which is like 0.74% different.

But it depends on the offset of the rim etc scrub wise, and if you want pointless stretch or more tyre on the road or not

Offset's 42. 4mm difference on the diameter should be ok right? So putting this rim on a 195 tyre should be ok?

I'm hoping to keep the profile of the tyre at 55 i was contemplating 45 or even 40 profile however I'm not sure how the suspension would cope and the gap between the wheel and the wheel arch might be too big alongside the fact i wanna keep a bit of ride comfort, roads in my area are a mare.

The profile is a percentage of the width (if you didn't know)

So basically you need to lose 2" of sidewall from what you currently have to compensate for the bigger rim size.

If you keep large profile tyres they will scrub and make your speedo inaccurate..so you have to find a tyre that's suitable. Ride won't really get better as you need a lower profile tyre
