Berg Cup G40 track toy

Featured Replies

Thought I would start a build thread on here to keep a log

Initial plans were to build a simple mk3 G40 turbo as a solid base turned up with a melted piston.

Here she is after arrival

Shortly after starting the strip down I was lured in the world of the mk1 and this got loaded onto my trailer sporting a new rollcage, suspension mounts and a PPP subframe.

The car is now mounted on a spit so I can get a good look at the rusty bits and work out the next plan of action.

Bit of an update from today:

I've started stripping the under seal off the floor as media blasting cant remove it very easily.

Rear valance has some rust issues

And a few small holes on the sill

Anyone know where best to get replacement panels for these from?

Also does anyone know what the square bracket with a hole in it behind the towing eye is for?

Very nice! I commented on your thread on the mk1 forum today.

How is the spit mounted? Straight through the bumper holes? How do you think it would work in a single garage?

I think that plate in the last photo is for transporting the shells around at the factory. I can't see any other use for it.

What's the history on the car? I thought it was one of PPP's projects.

that plate in the last photo is for putting it up on axle stands I think it was Yeti who revealed that in a thread a while ago.

This project looks great be nice to see it next year at any shows if its done

Update from today I've pretty much finished cleaning the floor

But I did unearth this which is less than ideal

As it is supposed to look like this

Current plan is to carefully remove the area circled in red to get access to the yellow highlighted area so I can repair that correctly.

Anyone else done this? Or got any tips on how to remove the red part without damaging it too much.

Thanks

Behind the towing bar, square bracket is for trailer hitch.

Best way fix that is drill the spot welds of to top part and remove it (make some lines to mark correct position of the top part), avoid using grinder as much as possible. After removing that top part you can check how bad is the beam below it. After fixing the beam, just fit the top part back and align it with the marked lines and weld the drilled spots, easy way imho.

Bit of an update, all the sealer is now removed and the car is now roofless

The car is going to be media blasted at the end of the week, so it will be interesting to see what state it will be in when I get it back. The doors and boot are going for acid dipping.

Donor roof source,

Which is also now roofless

Clearly the roof is a stressed memeber as the pillars move a bit when its removed.

Small update

I've fixed the rear axle mount. I cut out all the rust and built it back up in layers like the original

Here is a before and after

I've also fixed one of the arches. It had previously been partially cut to allow larger wheels/tyres under the arches. So I just finished the job a bit neater and also repaired the rear section

More updates soon, hopefully.
