personally i think tax evasion is quite a serious offence...it also feeds all the ringing of cars and stolen kit etc......

Question it really begs is if you've told your insurance about the engine swap, as that's the one that can land you in no end of shit.

I would expect insurers would want the engine numbers and cc to match the V5 for a policy to be in place rather than void and they would probably request a SVA for modification or at the least a fitters conformation of the work done on an engine change so its to a safe standard inclusive of other upgrades required to make the car roadworthy such as more powerful brakes etc..

...tax evasion is a far greater offence....

so if you brought a car with a non listed engine i would expect the insurance to be void along with the tax as it couldn’t possibly be legal on the road...correct me if I'm wrong though...

How did I know my Bug had the wrong engine in it? The engine was out of a camper made a year before my bug. I knew. If you're in the know, which you should be if you're buying a car with a conversion, then knowing the car your looking at buying is a must.

My bug was tax exempt, so declaring it has no effect to anybody or anything.

Is that still a crime? I'll come quietly I swear.

My bug was tax exempt, so declaring it has no effect to anybody or anything.

if you modify a tax exempt vehicle it may be such that it has not enough parts of the original vehicle existing for it to retain its original id...then an SVA is required.

modified cars at my house are legal and insured with the correct engine numbers and chassis parts on the V5 for them to retain the original id.

I went to great lengths to change the engine numbers on a V5 for a more powerfull engine from higher spec model in 1 mod i did.the vehicle had to go for SVA as the shocks were non standard,the engine was non standard and various other bits.this made the car too far beyonnd the original spec for it to retain its original id and was issued a Q plate.Thus loseing its tax exempt status...

how many mods does your tax exempt bug have then..?...do you know of the points system for retaining original ids on cars?

had i not done this the vehicle would of been uninsured and the tax also void.....

if this website is stupid emough to allow such sales as a car heavily modified with an incorrect V5 then I'm sure the police would be keen to view the pages on offer....i would if i was looking for a stolen classic....

If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

On EVERY forum you'll find cars for sale with incorrect V5's.

If you declared all your modifications to your insurance company, then your insurance wouldn't have been void.

I'm well aware of the points system, I've never known anybody to go out of there way to take an SVA test, on a car without extreme modification.

And I've only ever heard of MOT testers reporting the car if the chassis has been modified.

I no longer own said Beetle, was the buyer bothered at all by the engine change... No. Why? Because it had a more desirable engine in it!

at the end of the day dodgey vehicles cost all of us in higher premiums...fact...

fed by internet and the ease of modern technology to make older vehicles desirable it does concern all of us.especially if your pride and joy gets stolen and is sold as another car online...

i have seen plenty of vehicles refused M.O.T with incorrect parts fitted by a tester with a vast car knowledge...3 of which were cloned cars returned to the owners...

it is up to all of us to keep our car security as we spend alot more than cars are worth on the whole.this means we need to play by the rules and it would be sheer stupidity to sell a car and admit the documents are wrong.

that depends if the coil overs are approved for road use and how many mods you have on the car,if you have a highly modified car it may not be as such to the original it may require an inspection to make sure its safe for the road..

If you look into things properly I'd say over 90% of modified cars probably arnt legally on the road.

Infact most cars really for not declaring they've fitted a non genuine air filter or similar in a service..
