I have a 99-V 6N 16v AFH, never had an issue with previous 6N's but the lights on the valver are shocking.

May as well turn em off, they're that good (drove over Bettws mountain & almost ended up 300 ft below)

What can I do ?

There's no red rust in the lamps, they're in pretty good condition & I have xenon blue bulbs fitted.

I know it sounds daft but have you tried some standard halogen bulbs such as the H4 or H7 depending on the fitment of course.

The 6n headlights aren't the best tbh.

Upgrading your bulbs would be a good start, I use OSRAM Nightbreakers and they're much better than any cheap eBay bulbs.

I upgraded the bulbs to xenon blue & the only difference is a slight blue haze !

The lenses will have picked up stone chips and discoloured over the years, that will effect light output.

I think your best bet would be to fit some aftermarket headlights (Projector lenses offer the best light pattern) complete with a set of HID's.

Wish I could afford hoffele's, unfortunately I can't though !

Get a set of depo's :)

Hofele's are amazing though, the light pattern is spot on, really light up the road well... plus they made my car look proper evil lol.

The problem I first came across in this thread was the words "xenon blue" they are poor quality bulb that where painted blue. That's at least 50% output lost right there

Get a set of decent quality, normal uncoated bulbs, dont have to break the bank here.

Then if you are feeling the christmas pinch (like most of us ) then you probably wont want to go for an up rated loom, so the next best thing is to clean the earth points behind the passengers indicator. No doubt it's nice and corroded. Should make a bit or improvement.

I would steer away from hids in the mk4, my reasoning for this because the output is really scattered and you will only have to drive on front of one to realise this. It isnt pleasant. also, the depo or fk projector lights in there standard form ar not much better, they do need a bit of fettling to get right.

I am willing to bet that most people notice an improvement because they come with a relayed loom.

That are not really suitable for hid as even they are scattered, but I agree that it is a lot better then goes on the normal reflector lights.

If you have projector lights it is easy to swap them out for proper xenon projectors. Mine are bixenon units from a bmw 5 series and I use a d2s adaptor on normal ballasts.

The cut off and spread is amazing and I had a friend drive the car as I drove in front and it didn't even look like they were on let alone blind me.

There are loads of websites showing how to, motly in the sttes mind you but it is do able. They seem to love using TL projectors, which I think is an american car? Either way the principle is the same.

The problem with the standard 6n lights is that the pattern is on the glass.

Projectors + HID's is the way forwards.

Iv found that alot of xenon blue bulbs that are sold on eBay are not acturally xenons. Just standard bulbs with a blue lense (if thats what your've put on your car then the light output would be considerably worse than you standard bulbs as the blue tint blocks as much light coming out) pretty similar to if you was going to smoke your lights, the light would still get out but wouldnt be as bright.

On the look out for some E36 lamps to split and design around a 6N lamp shell.

I did want 2012 Aveo lamps but they're very expensive !!!

Thanks but i dont want angel eyes or a covering lens, I want open twin lamps.

I know the E36 will be ok without the lens as a friend of mine removed the lenses, colour coded the surrounds and fitted them to his 21 Turbo.
