Hi,

Replaced my old 14"s with a set of 17"s today, they look pretty nice. One problem though, every time I drive there is a squeaking/rubbing noise when I turn at the front end. Feels as though the wheels are catching against the wheel arches. Any way to resolve this without having to roll the arches?

If not, looks as though I'll have to sell them. Apologies if i have posted in the wrong place I am new, really need some help with this!

what size tyres are on the 14" and the 17"?

I'd guess they are catching on the inner arches if your car is standard height?

Depending on the width and offset of the wheels you could try spacers or simply remove the inner arch.

If the tyres are catching on the outer wings however then I'd suggest that you have picked a tyre size well too big for your car.

This will also affect your speedo reading meaning your speedo will be under reading all the time.

on the 14s it was 185/60/14 on these it is 225/45/17

Will the speedometer be under reading, by alot?

They arent catching on the outer wings its just the inside of the wheel arches as I parked up and noticed when on a full turn there is no space between tire and arch.

your 17" are 9.82% bigger meaning an indicatd speedo 70 is actually 76.87mph

215/35/17 would see you being 0.81% larger which is acceptable

Just took it for a drive with three people, had two sat navs which showed speed travelled at and an app and they were all the same and in accordance with my speedo reading? Don't know how viable that is to look at but they wouldnt show the same would they?

Speedos are always out anyway, and I wouldn't trust the GPS ones too much either.

But it's standard physics that a bigger wheel will travel faster than a smaller wheel if they are both doing the same RPM.

The reason your tyres will be catching your arch is because you have increased the width of the tyre by 40mm and also increased the diameter by almost 10%. Going for a slightly narrower and lower profile tyre should solve all your issues.

You should try and stay within 2.5% of the standard tyre size when changing wheels/tyres so as to try and avoid any issues.
