You should be able to get the snapped bolt end out as it's bathed in oil isn't it? I managed to do that before winding it out with a jewellers screwdriver. New bolts are about 4 quid from VW.

I would be slightly cautious of changing it due to how they're machined. It may damage your cam?

Surely an Ez out or similar you'll be able to get the broken bit out?

I've got a new bolt just my dad went abit crazy with a drill and i dont think ill be able to put the right sized thread back in it. That end of the rocker covers got a layer of silicone round it for now to stop the oil pissing out so changing it is really my only option!!

they are machined on the head - so match that head only. One from another head is likely to mash your cam and end up with swarf all over.

take it to a machine shop. get it helicoiled - do it right and then forget

I have attempted changing one of these caps before and you can feel a difference if you use a cap not original to the head. It is very slight, lucky if it's 0.5mm but I reckon it will do damage to the cam.

I ended up changing the head as it was the quickest and easiest option, but if you can get it drilled out and helicoiled you'll be sorted.

I'll see if i can find someone around here to do it. Not sure if its beyond saving now though and if its a case of changing the head then ill get carried away and get it port/polished costing me tons!

But surely changing the camshaft would have an effect on the tolerances?

Presumably the cam caps are fitted, torqued up then either reamed or bored to a perfect circle and thus need to remain matched.

No cam or cap issues as of yet and I've changed the cam.

You've changed the camshaft in the past or changed it now and changed the cap now?

You can get away with changing the camshaft because it is a single shaft turned to an exact size. You shouldn't swap caps because they are made of two separate parts machined into a perfect circle to achieve something that's a very close fit to the camshaft.

Fair play to you if you've managed to fit another cap and it's working, but chances are it will do some damage.

Useful reading, which generally advises against changing one bearing cap..

This is apparently what is done to each head when they are being made to ensure the bearings are all parallel to each other prior to fitting the camshaft

and this is apparently what can happen if it's not rehoned if you do swap a cap
