Hey All,

Thought I'd start a builds post for my 6N 1.4 8v, here's a little back story.

Bought as my first car in November 2012 on 110000 miles for £420, I realise it's not the best mileage so the mods I intend to do will be ones I can re-use or sell on easy on another polo should mine decide to pack up however I've had no real engine issues with it since purchase.

Exterior;

Car body is okay, not the best... tailgate came with a huge dent which I replaced completely a year ago, 3 doors have heavy/obvious rust on them and over spring/summer I intend to replace them all as the scrappy near me quoted £20 a door, one sill needs doing for rust which is a £100 primed. Apart from that no real rust on the bottom and no rust from what I can see in and around arches which is good.

6N2/16V bumpers front and rear

Coilovers lowered at 40mm (Have a relatively country side trip to work with awful small width roads and potholes!

Alloys

Other smaller bits, will all be posted as and when!

Going to respray my front badge, replace sidies, would like to slightly tint my front lights but dont think thats legal?

Never liked the idea of wind reflectors but they actually look alright on some of the builds I've seen, thoughts?

I like wind reflectors, once this is lowered it ill look 10x better

Try getting wind deflectors if you're double minded about reflectors, see my project red auto thread. They look better and work better all year round. Unfortunately any amount of headlight tinting will not be legal, you may get away with it though if it's slight like 10% tint, or try a 'fly eye kit'.

Nice car - I have a dragon green 6n its a bit of a project like yours with the body work I've rubbed down and treated and hamerited most of the rust.

I'd like to do my own body work treatment, Think I'm going to have a bit of practice on a panel that will eventually be swapped out and scrapped but at £20 a pop for a new panel I think I'd rather do that. Want to attempt some rattle can jobs too, looks like fun.

Bought some mudflaps which I'm going to be putting on at the weekend, my arches are in dire need of a good jetwash first!

How my boot/back seats are right now, waiting for new lights to arrive so I can seal them up with some decent stuff to prevent the leaks I've been having.

This is looking really messy, pulled off the back badge to re spray it... though I ran out of spray.. also need to reseal the back plate where the wind wiper was and respray it again.

Found a spare speaker dash cover at the scrappy but the previous owner tried to spray it, so sanded down, primed and waiting for the final coat in black when my paint comes! Have done the other side too so they look the same.

Finally the scrapyard also supplied me with two chrome inside door handles that need a polish and eBay supplied me with some cheap mudflaps, though not convinced these are going to fit... each flap has different hole amounts and they only gave me 7 screws despite the holes on both totaling to 10.

New head unit, rear lights, interior carpet and some audio gear on it's way this week/next.

New head unit fitted but not sure if I like the way it sits out from the dash so much, I have the old surround from the cd player but that doesn't really fit, anyone got any ideas?

I have some new smoked rear lights, an MK3 Golf centre console to do a swap over with, getting VR6 leather seats next weekend and a black carpet! Once that's done I want to wrap the headlining and spray the grab handles/interior head light.

Looking good man, Why not have a go at smoothing that wiper delete? Really easy to do and looks so much better

Also, it doesn't look like the stereo is sat all the way back in the cage, you sure there's no ISO leads or anything behind it stopping it pushing back?

I've never done any filler work before but it's not a bad idea actually and something easy to practice on! Good idea, I'll have a shot with that as my old man has some filler! Thanks dude!

Yeah it's sitting in as far as it can, basically the metal outlined sticks out so much it stops it there, I was thinking of unscrewing and seeing if that will help, what do you reckon?

I unscrewed the casing which took away the bits that blocked it from sitting in more which worked with the old plastic surround from the CD player and fits in fine, only issue is if I want the screen out then the plastic surround pops off with it haha

Could you not cut a slot out for it? or does the surround completely get it in the way

Further update to this, I need to have some sort of housing in it as yesterday it started slipping out. Going to try my old CD player cage in it tomorrow but I think it's going to restrict me to having it further into the dash. The plastic surround/trim that just keeps it looking neat and tidy doesn't really fit either. Just need to spend some time sitting in the car and experimenting with how to get it looking good and the screen being functional.

Little update, car just had a new dizzy fitted and just been up to London and picked up some VR6 golf seats... new carpet and an mk3 golf centre console.

The car has been driven daily as a shell, no carpet, no rear seats, all the boot stripped out. Just in the process of cleaning and fitting it all back together.

New carpet went in today and cleaned all the new seats and fitted the front two. The carpet I bought was suppose to be black but it looks more like a darker charcoal grey... not sure. Needs a bloody good hoover though then I can get the console on... Though I quite like how plain it looks without one at all!

Back seats need fitting, The guy sold them to me with the bases already done as they came off a polo but realised I have a 60/40 split on the new seats so not sure if they will be work. I'm guessing if I take the back plate off the old ones and fit them on the new seats then it will work but it will just come off as a whole as opposed to a split?

I'll post some photos when everything else is finished... oh the new stereo I bought just decided to stop working too so need to see if I can get that working again, hopefully just a fuse.

Wanted to post a little update here. While the Dragon Green Polo has served me well with no repairs needed since my last post the MOT is coming up end of October and the sills are really rusty, a recent quote suggested about 200quids worth of work to be done so decided to pack it in. (In deciding this I also noticed wheel bearing on it's way out and small oil leak coming from sump after use)

Going to look at a new Polo tomorrow, I really hope it's good! Will be posting a new thread eventually. Now I have to decide whether or not to keep the leather seats and just put up with the fact they have no lever (polo I'm checking out is a 3dr) or to keep the cloth seats for now...

Actually It did have some work done too it, the handbrake plate was pretty much snapped in half and had to be welded down to the body and new back box was done too.

My cousin has a fiesta and his handles broke off of his seats ages ago. It doesn't take long to wind them manually for people to get in the back.

My thoughts exactly! Plus I hardly take anyone in the back anyway, think I'll swap the leathers over

Little update; The car I viewed today was a state, 65k miles 3dr white CL so just what I'm after, got there, engine bay at the back had rust on the edges and around random places, oil filter was completely covered in rust, drove and started really nice... minor oil leak from gearbox, rust starting to come through on arches and sills and generally a poorly looked after car, a shame considering the mileage. The guy was so desperate to get rid of it that he knocked himself down 3 times, from 695 down to 450 and was really annoyed that I didn't want it, despite the fact it was an hour 20 minute drive to get to him! Tried to give me the sales pitch and told me there all rusty underneath like that in which I replied both mine and my dad's are not... wasn't happy at all! The hunt continues...

Moved over to the dark side. MK3 Golf... Polo is going to the scrappy over the next week!

Joking. It looks really clean. I love mark 3s but it's hard to find a good one like that.
