So I've had to buy a new ecu for my car I've brought one with the excact same part number as my old one and I'm waiting for it in the post. I've been told it will need to be coded to my car or something is this true and does anyone know of a place that can do it near Gloucester?

now, being new here, most of my knowledge comes from vag diesels, but the ecu's there all need to be coded to the immobiliser after 1996 I think

I can't see why a petrol ecu would be any different

It's easy to do if you have a vagcom (ross tech) lead but then not everybody does

I know some places want stupid money to do it

You'll find it does...

If you just change the ECU over without having it coded to the car then the immobiliser will kick in and the car won't run.

It will turn over and possibly start for a second but then die straight away.

Any decent garage should have the right gear to code the car, all you need is a laptop, Vagcom and an OBD2 cable.

if your unsure, open the key and look for small RFID chip, about 7mm long by 2mm square

if it's there you have an immobiliser

I'm fairly certain all 6ns had an immo fitted from factory.

Any decent lock smith should do it, and if memory serves me right you need the secret key code to adapt it with vag com, and to get this you need other software such as vag tacho.

Might be worth looking around for someone who can turn the immo off.

I think it was a UK government requirement that all vehicles from 1996/7 had to have a factory fitted immobiliser fitted as standard and certainly the dealer wiring diagrams show an immobiliser as standard fitment from 1996

every mk4 has got an Immo.

The early ones with golf3 dials has got the old one which all cars of generation Golf3 had. So T4, Passat 35i, Polo 6N1, Golf3 and so on.

You can buy these IMMO Boxes on ebay with disables Immo. Means you mount and connect it, and from this moment on the Immo needs no immo transponder any longer.

The IMMObox now always tell the ECU that the right key is used. :-)

If you need to get the IMMO programmed new, you need a VAG1551 or VAG1552, or VAG Com or similar programs.

BUT, do you have the Logincode for the IMMObox?

I bought my polo brandnew back in 1996, when i picked the car up @ the vw dealer i got the two keys with a little tag with the code for the locks (keynumber) and the lockincode under a layer i have to scratch away to read the code, just as on a lottery scratch ticket.

So i read so often that everything is possible even when you have got a notebook and a china-OBD cable.

Without that logincode you'll have a problem on the IMMObox.

Only the VW Garage can now find out the IMMO Logincode.

Buy a cheap ecu, immob box and key combo.

Fit and get on with your life.
