So, I've got a fully working 1.3 GT Polo and I'm planning on doing a 1.6 AEE swap. The car is used around town to carry stuff, pick up parts for the garage and just have a lot of fun with . I recently got hold of a 1.6 AEE engine with the water pump and cambelt+tensioner. So, I'll list what I have and I kindly ask you to point put what I'm missing. I'm going to swap the GT camshaft on the AEE and all the anciliaries.

Fully working 1.3 GT engine - check

085 5 speed gearbox - check

1.6 AEE engine with water pump, cambelt and tensioner - check

Head gasket for 1.6 - check

1.6 Clutch, Flywheel and pressure plate(not that I'm going to use it)

So, I need:

-Custom intake to be able to use the GT injection. I think I'm just going to re-drill the GT intake

-AEE exhaust manifold

-8V GTI injectors. I've also got a '95 mk3 8v Golf GTI, will these work?

What else?

If I get the info I need I promise I'll post a photo of the car on two wheels

Read that whole thread. Thanks man! I'll post some pictures once i get back from university in about two weeks. The AEE is out, been cleaned and checked over. I've jut got to pull the 1.3 out and start the puzzle

No worries, should be more info in the engine conversions thread in the faq aswell. I wouldn't worry my cars paint is in far worse condition. Cool, seems appropiate to start a build thread if you're doing an engine conversion

I guess I'll start a build thread after the engine conversion. Anyone want to see it doing some autocross stuff? I'm just having loads of fun with it, picked it up all registered for under 200 euros and paid after 3 months . I'm also going to overhaul the front suspension and brakes when I get home. One of the front shocks is WASTED. The rear suspension is a KW from an Audi 80 Cabrio so that's already been sorted.

i definitely think the 1.6gt needs to be redone there was so much more potential to be gained from carvers build. ie getting the fuelling on a good map set up with a good cam etc would be great to see

Well I don't know if I can do it more justice as the car is just a beater. But, event though the car is just a beater, I bet that the 1.6GT engine will be fun and worth keeping

So, seeing as I'm about to start the project, I still have two questions unanswered:

1) What king of golf GTI injector will fit? Will the ones off a Mk3 8v ADY do the job?

2)I've read that the starter might raise some compatibility issues. I plan on using the GT box and the GT starter...I don't see a problem there but I might as well ask than live in ignorance

Re drilling the GT intake may work but the ports are also a different shape, AEE are a circle and the 3f are oval

I was thinking about welding the bolt holes on the head and re-drilling it. The ports are not that big of a problem, I can make them match with my trusty dremel

Hey guys. Started doing the conversion, got the 1.3 engine out and started building the 1.6 up. So, the 1.6 is an AEE and the 1.3 is a 3F with a 5sp 085 trans. My dilemma is...the 085 box will not fit the AEE block. Only two bolt holes line up and one of the drive shafts won't clear the oil pan. Where did I go wrong?

You have got a small block AEE havnt you?

Think so, I didn't know there was also a tall block AEE. How can I tell if it's a small block vs a big block?

Is the AEE that I've got a tall block? I think when I got it a 020 gearbox was attached to it, can't really remember as I got it with two other engines.

Sounds like you have the AEE from a mk3 golf which has a different bellhousing , get a pic up of the bellhousing area

Now I'm pretty sure it's the wrong engine. Guess I'll have to use it with the mk3 golf gearbox

I'm off to university for now so the project is stalling. I've got the gearbox compatibility problem and don't know how to get around it. There are a few alternatives I guess:

-Use the 020 gearbox bellhousing on the 085 gearbox? Will it work?

-Use the 020 gearbox on the car. Seems pretty tricky as I have to adapt the shift linkage.

-Find a small block AEE. This one might be the easiest solution but the most expensive

If it's anything like the skoda version, there's an adapter plate that bolts between the block and the bellhousing.

These engines are known for weak stem seals and to be fair, the piston rings are normally less than brilliant, so maybe worth replacing them at this stage?

I have a 085 gearbox with 020 bellhousing from a 6N diesel. I then need the 085 5 speed bellhouing to fit my gearbox.

If you could arrange a courier I could ship the bellhousing to Romania as it's no use to me.
