Hi everyone, i've been a member of many VW forums for many years, always been into the Mk1/2 Golfs, had more GTI's than you can shake a stick at my first being a 1986 8v I got in 1996 3 years after passing my test and my last being my favourite a mint Edition 1 G60.

I got the biking bug a few years ago, sold my G60, passed my test and got a GSXR600 and never looked back, well apart from flicking through PVW every now and again, then quickly walking off, my love of VW's has never gone away, maybe just suppressed for a while..

Anyway thought I best pull my finger out as I've finally bought a Polo, a 1988 CL, I'd spotted it a few months ago near my local Tesco petrol station with a "For Sale" sign and just a mobile number in it. The wife has always wanted me to get another car as its "handy" but I was a bit reluctant as I can't leave them alone at all, usually spiralling out of control. But this breadvan kept catching my eye and last sunday night I was dropping my daughter off and decided to have a quick nosey around the Polo, thought it was pretty clean, some rust around the arches.

I just phoned the chap the next day, he wasn't very forthcoming with info and I wasn't sure he knew much about Polo's, probably just another car he'd picked up and was selling on, he usually has a couple of older motors at the side of his Bed shop for sale. He said he just wanted rid of it and would take £350.. I thought it was worth a punt, so my cousin picked it up the next day [no MOT] and took it to his garage https://www.facebook.com/bnsautos to see what needed doing.

Broken lower dash

Big Oil leak

Has a fair old engine oil leak, you can see more underneath the car:

Cleaned the bay and it looks tidy, battery tray is good:

Here are some snaps of the offending arches and some of underneath the car, at least the oil leak has aided in rust protection of the floor pan

Serviced it, new discs/padsr, replaced the rocker gasket, sump gasket gonna monitor it the next few days see if it continues.

Plans, first and foremost attack the rusty arches and anywhere else, hopefully nothing crops up too bad, then drop the suspension and a nice set of wheels and the rest well we'll see, the engine is running sweet so unless my cousin rings me to say he's got a VW XX in he's breaking and the engine is just begging to be planted in my bay, i'll just run and enjoy it.

Just need to source all the niggly interior bits that i've noticed missing:

NS mirror adjustor knob

NS door handle surround

Lower dash section without broken mounting points and missing screw covers

Thanks for listening, the wife just glazes over when I get all enthusiastic about reviving an old car.. I'm gonna race her to the the supermarket today for the sunday big shop, see if my super light Polo can whip her Lupo

Good buy that. The rust doesn't look to bad, nice to have on hand someone with a low loader.
