I have a few questions.

I drive a 2004 vw polo 1.4 petrol and the ABS light stays on permanently.

I have taken it to a garage and they have run a diagnostic test on it and it comes back with faulty ABS pump and this costs a lot of money.

I have been looking on the internet and a forum I was reading suggested checking the ABS fuse in the battery compartment. Low and behold the fuse looks cracked.

My question is, would a broken fuse stop the ABS working? I mean i have tested the brakes on the road. The ABS does not come on when I slam on brakes so I know they are not working. Would a broken fuse do this?

My second question is, Would the fault code and light need to be re set by a computer after changing the fuse or will the light go out straight away?

If the fuse is cracked it will cause a voltage drop accross the fuse and this will be picked up by the ABS control/pump unit as a low volt and will put the fail/fault light on, if you cure the fault after around 20 start/stop intervals the memory should be wiped.

I have a 01276 fault - ABS Hydraulic pump - Electrical fault in circuit.

I read on another forum to check the 40A fuse on the battery and see if it is cracked. Mine is cracked so hoping this will be the problem.

So you say start and stop it about 20 times and this will clear the fault by itself?

You need to actually drive it above 15mph for it to count as a stop/start cycle and it should clear the fault light if not then you'll need to use VCDS/Vagcom to reset the light

I have changed the fuse, total cost of £3.59 and 5 minutes of my time.Drove the car above 15mph and the light cleared. So much for garage wanting to charge me £800 + for the job. A little time on the internet and its all sorted.
