hi guys

currently rebuilding my polo engine and some of the tappets are in bad nick, i reconed them but some are past it ,

anyways I've got some new ones i no how to fit them

its just i would like to no if anyone pre fills them before fitting ?

seem logic to soak them in oil, so some oil is them prior to installing them so it is smoother on start up and they should refill when oil pressure is up to stratch

so to wrap it up anyone who has fitted new lifters if you would be able to tell me if you would do this or your method of doing this

I left mine over night in some engine oil to soak, and you're not meant to start the engine for a few hours after you've bolted the cam back down I don't think

cheers nige8021 i did all that with my old tappets but 2 of them seemed to still stay sticky so rather than pissing around i decided to buy some new ones

harris , was this with new lifters ? al probs leave them in oil over night the oil should still pull thru the small hole on the lifter hopefully over the night i just want some oil in there so there not empty when i start it up

so just leave them to settle in some oil over night ? dont really want to be taking them apart filling with oil then putting it back together just want to leave them be and get some oil in and wack them on

and yes u are surpost to leave the engine for 30 mines before start up from what i remember

Immerse them in oil and compress them when immersed, you may see a bubble come out but not always. As they expand open again, they fill with oil. You can do this a few times with each tappet to get them filled. You don't need to compress them too hard.

Do this with the surface protected, as naked grips can damage the working surface of the tappet. Electrical tape is suitable. Pipe grips are best as they can be adjusted to the right length so they don't slip and have the curve required to get under a bucket tappet. If they don't reach them tape a suitable extension onto the jaw of the grips, as the skirt of the tappet is easily damaged, and box damage there renders the tappet scrap.k

I've just oiled up the external surfaces and had no issues at all , there is a short time stated before starting the engine but most of us will take a while to assemble it

The point in leaving them to stand before starting or turning over the engine, is to make sure that there isn't too much oil in them, which could open the valve(s) further than they are intended to open, with the possibility of them 'kissing' the piston(s).

fuck that. hit them on a block of wood till the middle pops out, clean it out, then fill with oil. chuck back in and fire it up. sweet

He's already bought new ones. And has cleaned his in the past

well in that case id do the same just no need to clean them out lol
