Hey iv got a 6n2 polo gti, she is sitting at 116k miles and I have full service history and it was last phone at 103k before I got her...

Anyway, she has a high picthed screech coming from what seems the left hand side while driving...

It happens when I'm in gear crusing along.. but when I give her some beans she stops... until I start to cruse again...

When I put the clucth in she also shuts up..

I think she may be in need of a new / refurbed gearbox..

Doesnt sound like the brakes if it goes if you put the clutch in whilst moving.

Sounds to me like either something is catching somewhere (when you accelerate the front lifts up)

Most likely its a belt or even a bearing on alt etc, they often squeel at a certain rev range.

Never heard of a gearbox squeel.

Is the squeel consistant, the same every time, not changing pitch?

Recording would be helpful.

Maybe try revving at idle, go through the range slowly and lift the bonnet up. Also check the belts for wear?

That almost sounds like what my gearbox is like but a lot worse, does it do it in neutral? Just like a grinding noise ( crrrrrrrrrr ) and goes when you put clutch in? If so its the input shaft bearing, but isnt much to worry about.

However listening to the engine bay id say you definately have a bad bearing on your alternator. Get a long screwdriver and put the metal end on the alternator when the engine is running (be careful) and the handle end up to your ear, ontop of your hand if its easier. It should sound like a gentle hum, if its screetching etc then theres your problem.

Other than that, just get a spanner and whip the belt off, theres an automatic tensioner, looks like this,

On the right hand side of the image theres a square bit, thats where you put your spanner on and push down (if i remember right).

Very easy to do, i think if you release it far enough it will hold itself with a pin, cant remember lol

Then just move the belt out of the way, and spin the alternator bearing.

Make a not of how it came off first in case you forget.
