Want to paint rear plastic trim above licence plate on my polo mk2f. I will be using rattle cans and I know I need plastic primer , top coat , lacquer. But am unsure on what grade paper I need before I lay down the primer ?

Don't forget panel wipe, as if someone has previously put linseed oil or back to black wax on this will hinder the primer adhesion.

Just need paper to give it a slight key, 1000 grit should do okay.

id use a red scotch pad

as above degrease it ALOT , hot soapy water then several wipes with panel wipe and fresh cloths each time

plastic primer it , then a couple of coats of high build primer , sand with 800 wet and on with the top coat

if your colour requires clear coat then straigh on with that , dont sand the base coat

If it were me, I'd use thinners to degrease, and then soapy water and a aggressive scotch. Any couler before the primer.

Try to sand the mottle out of the plastic 1st also, (is there mottle)

Yes it did have mottle but now sanded out and degreased and few coats of plastic primer laid down shall leave it 24 hours before I sand down..

A few photos its had 3coats of plastic primer , then 3 coats of filler primer then 3 top coats but no clear coat as not sure if it will benefit from it ?

It looks a lot better than the photos..

No clear coat? Doesnt it have a non glossy finish?

Not always, but i no i would.

Give it another degrease, lightly dust a few more coats on, then laquer it.
