I have a 1997 Polo 6N without foglights.

I have got a pair of fog lights and the lower plastic grill to go with it.

How do i install the fog lights?

Do i need to take of the entire front bumper?

My lower grill is one whole part, not 3 parts as i have seen on some Polo 6n's

You need to remove the just the lower part of the bumper, but it might be easier to remove the whole bumper rather than trying to split the two sections

Vehicles with small bumper Removing: – Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers and remove ignition key. – Remove skirt → (Lower part of bumper) – Remove securing bolts -arrows-. – Pull fog light housing out of bumper and disconnect connector. Installing: Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When installing observe the following: – Check fog light settings and adjust if necessary – Check function of headlight.

I hope you have got the right lights,

The foglights for the normal 2 part bumper are mounted on the frontend.

The foglights for the 16V bumper are mounted on the bumper from behind.

So you need the right foglights, everything else is bullshit.

You know that there is already a wire from the centralelectricbox to the frontendcentralconnector for the fogs? So you just have to take a wire from the lightswitch to the centralelectricbox and from the frontendcentralconnector to the foglights (a complete frontendwireloom from the scrapyard is much better).

What about the lightswitch for foglights, do you have this switch already?

Yes I have the right type of fog lights.

I was just planing to fit a extra switch inside the car, I have a wire kit for extra lights.

What kind of dialsunit does your polo have?

revcounter right and speedo left or revcounter left and speedo right?

I ask cas i want to know which generation of centralelectricbox you have got.

Then i'll tell you where to connect the wire from the fogswitch to the centralelectricbox....

I did not think of that there were wires for fogligts in my car. So I was planing to use a kit (wires, relay, fuse and switch) to connect them.

But if there are wires I can use already in the car that would be the best. Do I then also need a new main lightswitch? In cars with factory foglights, the switch is in the main switch right?

So here we go.

Thats how it is or would be from factory with original Lightswitch for foglights.

Thats the lightswitch:

Pull out the switch, the front foglights are on, when you pull one step further, the front fogligfhts stay on + the rear foglights are on.

On this Lightswitch with front foglight-option, you have the contact 13 on the back. So you with your normal switch shouldn't have that wide contact 13, right?

On the connector you also shouldn't have the pin 13, is there an contact with a wire in no 13? I don't think so.

And here you have to start in case making everything as original as possible.

So from that connector place 13 you need a wire in 1,5 square mm diameter down along the original wireloom to the back of the centralelectricbox.

There you'll find a couple of different connectors, from the insidewireloom, the dashboardwireloom, the enginewireloom, the steeringcolumn wireloom and so on.... the wire from the lightswitch for the front foglights ends in the blue connector "P" Pin No. 1

So i guess that wire in missing in your case.

Now from here the current flows inside the electricbox and comes out throught the orange connector "A2" Pin No. 8

which belongs already to the wireloom whoch leads to the enginebay.

The other end of this wire ends in the 19pin frontendcentralconnector on Pin No. 5

So check out that connector in the front in the enginebay. You should have that pin inside the connector, right?

Thats, as far as i know, always, equal if frontfogs were ordered or not. I guess it has to do with producing the different wirelooms.

There were wirelooms for the different engines, so with and without mpi/spi and than with or without Aircondition. And for only one damned wire they didn't wanted to produce complete new wirelooms. But thats just what i assume.

So from the centralelectricbox till this 19pin connector it is already done.

In the frontentwireloom, which is btw just for the complete frontillumination, there are no wires for plus and minus for the foglights.

So that Pin No. 5 on the other side shall be empty in your case, right?

So what you need to do is clear now?

Get a better lightswitch, the wire from the lightswitch to the centralelectricbox and from that frontendconnector pin5 to your both lights and from there to an minus-point down in the enginebay or take minus from the brown wire fron the headlights.

To do that as original as possible according to the current flow diagrams would go to far now i guess.

By the way, you can have my lightswitch, and i would provide you a wire with the right pins for the lightswitch to the electricbox and a wire with the right pin for the frontendconnector to your foglights...... shipping is 14,90Euro to norway. there is a guide in the FAQ section on how to do this. you do need the switch, but the one above is for a left hand drive so will not fit.

i have done this on mine recently and made a relayed harness.

so as christian has said above, you need the switch with front fog, and add a wire from the switch connector to the back of the fuse box. this is covered in the guide. i made mine with two connectors i got from a scrap loom. again as above the wiring is there in all cars between the fusebox and front panel connector. mine didnt have the wires from front panel to fog lights, so i made it.

this is were you can use your wiring kit as it is essentially the same as what i have done. you will need two male pins to go into the front panel connector and two plugs for the fog lights. i used side repeater plugs as they are the same.

so you will wire the relay control wires to the white/ yellow and brown wires are the front panel connector. wire pin 30 to the battery positive (with a fuse) then pin 87 goes to the nearside fog light, then on to the off side fog. then the earth wire goes fron the offside to nearside theneither to the battery negative post, or even better to the chassis leg earth posts.

you could use straight wires from the connector, but using a relay is so much better and will be easier on the wiring and make much better light. i used it becausei have 100w bulbs and tint film over it so would hardly turn on with the normal wiring.

this is the guide in the FAQ section, basically what you have done above really. i have done it the same way with the wire from switch to fuse box but only i used a relay up front, which if you are going through the trouble of adding extra wires then it makes sense to add a relay directly to the battery also.

do you mean the bridge in the guide?

the relay comes on when the switch is pulled. to be honest, i dont know why either because it works without the relay as the connection is bridged. unless the relay pins are different, but as it looks now it bridges pin 30 and 87 of a normal relay, meaning its always closed, meaning the lights would always be on if it controls the lights.

On my black polo the foglights came from factory on, on the daily blue one i fittet everything myself.

Both don't have any relay.

Okok, the blue is from 97, so it has got the other centralelectricbox without that socket.

When i look at the current flow diagram, a relay wouldn't make any sense.

The socket right from that socket with that 90degrees angle bridge is more worth to change against a "53" relay, so you switch the current for the normal horn or a big horn via the relay and with the buttons in the steeringwheel you switch just the relay.

So on socket No.10 it makes absolutely sence.

On socket No. 9 it makes NO sense...... to me, that's just my opinion.

Anybody else out there to explain that relay to me?

i think you are right.

i remember now that on my other early 6n, i added the relay and it got very hot, so i put the bridge back and they still worked so left it with the bridge.

So again that shows me that a DIY is A DIY, not THE DIY.

THE DIY does not exists, and as long everybody can write one, i better make my own experiences with help of the current flow diagrams.
Then i know what i am doing.

Just to clarify, I have used a relay in the engine bay, which is switched using the current from the front panel connector.

I haven't used a relay in the fusebox. That is what the guide says, and I agree it isn't necessary.

Yeah that is what i mean, the relay on relaysocket No.9.
