1.0 6n head gasket

Featured Replies

Hi, sorry I don't post much but not much to say in my case... its a 1.0 6n which never let me down and has a black box in it meaning I can't rag it or put many mods on it. oil service flashed up, thought i'd get all the filters, fluids and sump bung, check the oil level... low hmm good job i'd bought oil ! and coolant is bellow minimum! undo cap and beige paste every where doh!

Anyway, i've started stripping it on the road outside my house lol and I've drained coolant and all connected hoses, removed air filter housing, and nearly the exhaust manifold (one stubborn nut and I broke my small ratchet (buying new one tomorrow and Haynes manual) I'm not quite ready to remove stretch bolts but even if I was I cant seem to find them? also I was going to lable the ht leads and check engine is at tdc before removing timimg belt etc but I still worry about messing it up and end up with pistons hitting valves, will leaving it in gear be enough? also should I get a straight edge to check for warping ?

cheers

as for the timing line it all up as per the haynes before you take it apart , then once youve refitted the belt , turn the engine over several times with a spanner and recheck , check turning and checking until you are 100% sure its right , if not ask on here again

oh head bolts ..rocker off , then have a good look , might be caked with oil /skank ..make sure you use the right tool

Thanks for your response, I've got the Haynes book of lies and it tells me I must refer to tdc via cam and crankshaft markings. I cant get access to the crankshaft so I have no idea where the markings or on the crank, but have alingned the markings by the cam shaft only by rotating the cam pulley. it doesn't mention removal of auxiliary belt at all but I can't see how I would manage to do this without removing auxiliary belt ? and have i messed it up by roataing cam pulley?(bear in mind belt is still attached )

cheers :)

oh and just remembered I read on an old post on here someone doing a head gasket on a valver that to find tdc, they removed no.1 spark plug , popped there screwdriver in plug hole and turned engine... good idea?

You have to get access to the crank pulley, as just relying on the camshaft marks does'nt ensure the correct timing. using a screwdriver is a good method of checking that the piston is on TDC but the piston is on TDC twice in it's cycle so you still need to check the crankshaft marks to ensure it's timed correctly. You will need to remove the AUX belt so that you can remove the crank pulley and get the plastic cover off then you'll see the crank timing marks

Thanks, I thought so but I also thought they would have mentioned it in the book. also stuggling with one little nut which holds the plastic cover with the vw badge and 1.0 badge. the nut keeps turning but wont travel upwards. tried every trick I can think of apply pressure downwards whilst turning, pair of pliers pull upwards when turning I don't want to have to make a cut in the plastic cover if I can help it but i'm running out of ideas

Sometimes a bit of butchery is required, just try and make it as neat as possible so the next owner is'nt woried about the engine being worked on by a savage

I've got a jr hack saw so the cut should only be around 2mm, when I save some money again perhaps i'll buy a new one
