Crankcase breather/vent hose - Gti 6n2 (AVY)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Been a typical Googler and forum snooper before joining a little while back but no posts until now, so thanks for the few tips in the past.

I was burning a lot of oil in my Gti 6n2, so done a compression test to check for bore or head issues, but all cylinders were solid at 14.5 - 15 bar. When i was replacing the air filter the airbox was full oil. On further inspection the tube that runs accros the inside of the airbox from the breather hose to the throttle body was completely filled with oily emulsion/Mayo looking gunk. Now cleared. Then on to the breather hose itself and it turns out its very soft and squishy, so I ordered a new one from TPS after finding out that these can collapse when hot (anyone have any experience?).

So, two questions:

1. How much of a b4stard is it to fit the crankcase breather hose? Access looks tight? Anything to consider, or tips that I should do?

2. There is a two pin female connector halfway up the hose, what sensor goes in here? Something Map related?

Cheers

Cheers very much Nige, appreciate the reply. I will defo do that and as you haven't mentioned anything else I guess its reasonably straight forward.

On the heater element, I am having issues with over fuelling and idle seems a little high when warm... maybe this being blocked is making my engine thinks its in cold start/choke and running rich all the time? Any thoughts?

as above, and as i have always done is take the manifold off. you can get at it from under neath, but this inst always easy. i would take the breather pod off completely and run a cleaner through it. i personally have used petrol and also diesel to good effect, but other things like carb cleaner, gunk gizer etc work very well. note: if you do use fuel, make sure you thoroughly dry it out before fitting to avoid any mishaps.

the part that the pipe slides over can unclips and there is a little separator inside which comes out. clean it as much as possible. also check the two hole in the block are clear, it isn't uncommon to have the lower one totally blocked. try not to over tighten the bolts as the plastic will crack and eventually the whole thing will fall off.

i would do this job then see how it idles after a few miles. but if its still erratic then a common failure is the temp sender in the thermostat housing, as this will as you say tell the ecu its cold when its hot.

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks very much for this info. I will get this done on Saturday and let you guys know how it went.

Sorry to bring this Thread back up. I'm new here and I'm having the same problems. Is it worth trying to clean the breather block through first? Also i will need all new breather hoses as i have the same problem as muzzer, the hoses are soft and when squeezed stay distorted. Does anyone know where to get these from?

any help on this topic would be much appreciated! (I'm worrying my ass off)

Is it a good idea to use compressed air and shoot through the breather? Just want to make sure mines clear :)

I cut the center of my collapsed breather pipe and fitted a piece of plastic water pipe inside fixed by jubilee clips which stopped it collapsing, this fitted fine until I was searching through a breakers today and found a 2001 Polo with the breather with the socket in the middle, this is made of stronger stuff than the older pipe and exactly the same size and shape and only cost £3.00. Fitting is a challenge from above without removing the manifold but fairly easy from underneath, I know as I just finished doing the same.

Appreciate this is a VERY old thread! I've had similar issues, my car has been running 'fine' for what must be a couple of years with a split and broken breather pipe.

Recently performed a bodge job repair with radiator hose and a piece of copper pipe inside to stop it collapsing and some jubilee clips.

When fitted back onto the air filter the car now runs rough as hell! Any ideas?! Could it be a faulty sensor/heater mid way down the pipe that has never had any effect due to the pipe being split anyway all these years?

Also, does anyone know the VW part number for the breather hose?!

Cheers in advance!
