Handbrake went 'Bang' when pulled up

Featured Replies

Hi folks!

I had to park on a hill, went to pull my handbrake up and suddenly a loud bang from underneath the car – however the handbrake continued to hold the car in place. I drove off and parked somewhere else and the handbrake still seemed to work?

Are there two cables and if so is my handbrake still supposed to be working if a cable has gone?

Cheers

Chances are one of the cables has snapped and it's holding on the one good one, that's why there are two cables!

Sounds like what Nige said

Great thanks Nige!

I should imagine I need to get this to a garage right away.

Cheers mate.

A snapped cable can be fairly apparent if you look under the car.

nah no garage needs to be involved. A haines manual, few spanners, new cable, preferably two ( cost £30-£50 for a pair) and about an hours time. save your self a £60 + VAT on Labour and a mark up on parts.

Do it your self you'll be pleased to know how simple it is.

Also if your Polo is a 6n2 you'll need to remove quite a bit of interior trim to get at the cable ends and adjusters. The centre console had to be lifted.
