Danny's 16v Openair - The car that was meant to be a set of wheels

Featured Replies

Been a long time since I posted on here, but I'm back behind a polo again so thought it was about time I done a build thread seeing as this is turning into some kind of project and not a daily like I planned. I'll start by how I wound up with the Openair in the first place because it wasn't even planned. I sold my old 6n and was after an Audi TT, then a lupo came up for dirt cheap, got 9j 3SDM's in mint green on it, sold that and swapped the wheels for another set (this is where te openair comes into play later), bought a TT, got 5 miles from where I bought it and the engine blew up, complete new engine needed (wasn't hooning or nothing, just an impulse buy that I should've avoided really).

After I hadn't seen the new set of wheels I swapped my 3sdm's for I got suspicious as to what was happening, long story short the guy sold the wheels he owed me to the guy who had this openair, instead of getting the new wheels off him, I said to the new owner keep the wheels and I'll give him £300 for the openair, as he had a civic on hydro's and didn't need the openair anymore. And that's how I got the openair. Confused yet?

Now onto some pics... Firstly my old 6n

And the lupo that followed, looking back at it, I actually really liked it!

And then the TT, still got this and I've fully rebuilt it again using a 1.8T BAM block and AGU head.

And now the Openair itself...

Was only supposed to be a daily while I built the TT back up but you know how things go. Decided to see what the TT seats would look like in the openair so..

Out they came...

And in they went...

They look great in there and are really comfy, but now the rest of the interior looked shit, and odd interior just wouldn't do. So I spoke to Lavish Automotive in Woking about getting the rear seats and front and rear door cards done in black nappa leather just to match the fronts. A week past and they came out like this!

Couldn't be anymore happier with how it came out and I would recommend him to anyone looking to refresh their interior. I will be going back to him soon to take on the job of my boot build.

Here's the interior looking more at home. I had these harnesses lying about that I bought from a friend and stuck em in. I like them, but for now I've taken them out, not sure what I think to them in the car.

That's about as much as I can reveal at the moment, but it's now gone in for paint and bodywork at Str8Paint, and I've got enough to crack on with. I'll just leave this here for now...

Looks good, I do like a red 6n.

Just go the whole way and put the TT engine in the Polo, you know you want to...

Nice purchase, I would've snapped this up myself! jealous

It's something I have been debating. But that would mean rebuilding the old 225bhp lump with all new internals as they are shot to pieces. But I keep looking at it in my garage and thinking of it but for now, I don wanna see another 1.8T stripped down for a long long time

gonna run silly stretch again and make peoples eyes cry?

It's like you know me Jonny! I'm hoping this one actually makes it to players classic instead of breaking down on my drive with the paint still drying!

Look forward to seeing your blue neon wearing slut at a show soon ;)

you'll be waiting a long time. Deadline is UD15... ha

seen a polo before with a tt dash in and it looked nuts, think you should swap them over

  • Author

Oh really Jonny?! Serious work going into it then.

Tt dash would look sick but I love the TT and polo equally and I won't compromise one for the other so plan is run the tt daily until the polo is done and then run the polo daily and finish the TT

So how long is the polo staying as thought it was going up for sale?

Excited for the TT pal shall be good!

Keep up the good work!!!!!!!

Well I said to people "will do deal if cash sale before UD" as I wanted money to get the TT on the road. If it didn't sell by UD I'll be keeping it but all I had was wasters coming to test drive it and then say "I'll ask my mum for the money". So it didn't sell so I'm keeping it.

Yeah mate can't wait to get both out!

Oh really Jonny?! Serious work going into it then.

Lots of ideas floating around and rare parts collecting 8>)

Also few things that will make peoples eyes cry to :spiteful:

Lovely rims for what could be a top car.

My old polo at the top of the build thread gives me motivation to make this one better.

Hopefully it will be, so thanks pal
