I need to remove my windscreen to repair some rust spots on my MK2f. Has anyone on here done this before that could give me some advice? What tools do I need? Any tips on how to do it?

flat blade screw driver or similar blunt tool -from inside the car fold the rubber seal over the metal lip, work your way around and it will lift out

or cut the seal if its old and cracked

or some folk lay back in the seat and use thier feet to push it out ..never tried that and kinda sounds like a good way to break it

thats for a bonded in windscreen so no , polos are old skool style

if you want to cut the rubber use any kind of sharp blade , being carefull not to muller the paint

cant find much online , this kinda shows what I'm saying

id also say theres a fairly good chance you will crack it if youve not done em before , new ones are £60

I have done a few on old beetles using this rope and it works well . I also use a light smear of waxyol but never use washing up liquid as it contains salt and with attack the rubber and body work ..

We used KY jelly..... kinky

Right I'd like to try get it out and back in again without having to replace it so I'll try not to cut it. And i don't need any sealer or anything to put it back in?

just some rope and lube to refit

id suggest a new seal and cut the old one for best chances of saving the glass

So who sells new seals then if we did go down that route ?

Yea, I'd imagine it to be hard to find a new seal? As it's always hard to find parts for my car.

or kick a cracked sreen out in a breaker and take its seal , no longer avail from vw

Cheers for all the reply's. My screen does have a big stone chip in it too so that might make it more likely to break and I'm also lowering it next week and that would probably help to make the chip even bigger if I don't get it filled in. Maybe I should kick my screen out, save the seal then try get a second hand screen with no chips to replace it with.

Where can I get a new windscreen for £60? Mk2f? Can't find a seal for 1991 mk2f? Would like to change mine due to scratches inside. Previous owner must have been wearing a diamond ring when wiping off the condensation. Scratches all over it.

try some local window comapanys , tell em its cash and supply only

i was quoted £50 for clear or 60 for green glass

if you post up a pic of the mk2f seal i can tell you if its the same , the glass is so i dont see why the rubber isnt the same

Here is A picture I took of the rust a while ago, but you can see the seal in it..... is it the same as a mk2?

I've just bought a gassless welder to de-badge and de-wiper my tailgate so if it needs welding I'll weld it, I was going to grind the rust out and see how bad it is.

yeah be intresting to see how rusty it is ...kinda expecting mine to be worse under the rubber

right took my screen out today..was expecting it to crack and it did , 3 cracks in the lower corners near the tax disc , not really sure what i did wrong it just went as i was folding over the rubber , so be super carefull if you hope to save the screen

heres the rust , this first one had a tiny bit of scab showing outside the rubber , it will clean up

the other side is worse , that had a nasty scab showing about 10p size that id touched in its too far gone to clean up

cut this bit out and will weld in new tommorow

Wow that looks quite bad on the right side, I just hope mine isn't that bad underneath. And I really hope I don't crack my screen either as I can't really afford a new one, although I would like a new one as today I realized that mine has loads of stone chips and scratches all over it. I would defo like to see how you get on with welding and painting this though. Good luck with it!
