Boot Lifter Gas Strut Disassembly

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Has anyone ever attempted to open their boot lifter gas struts? Mine are off a Polo 6N.

I'm not trying to fix them, I have a spare set that I want to use for a non-car related engineering project. I want the sliding/strut action without the air spring/damper forces resisting motion. So I want to disassemble the struts to remove the pressurised air and any small orifices that might be resisting sliding movement.

If anyone has tried to do this before, how do the struts actually open? Any tips on carrying this out?

A warning message on it says "do not open", which implies that it can be opened, and the thing had to go together somehow. I just can't see how that might have been.

Thanks,

Chris

I think they're press-fitted together. Drill a hole in it? Obviously wear PPE.
