hi all, i want to know what i would need to do in order to put a turbo on my 1992 mk2f polo fox , its a 1.0L engine code AAU

what turbo would fit?

would i need to change anything inside the engine, e.g. cam shaft, pistions, valves etc etc

i haven't looked into turbo manifolds, intercooers or exhausts yet, just know il need them, any suggetions would be appricated

please dont tell me its pointless because the car is 1.0L

    In that case the door to power increasement is wide open. But as someone previously posted you will need to decompress the engine first. Other wise it will die very quickly go on YouTube and type in 1

    your insurance will increase alot anyway what they're getting at , bolt in a 16v afh and it will be a 100hp all day long , super reliable and parts off the shelf when you need them -vs a 1 l

You need to lower the compression and probably rebuild the bottom end before even starting any work with regards to actually fitting the turbo.

If it's power you want, a 1.4 AFH 16v i s much better and cheaper option, and it'll be reliable

thanks for the reply, i assume you mean the compression on the turbo? id rather not take the engine out but if its i must, i dont really wanna do an engine swap just yet, its more a project just because i want to

He means engine compression ratio, if u haven't looked into manifolds yet y are u asking the question. Do you own research first. You can't just chuck a turbo at it and it will work. I would suggest full engine re build low compression ratio gt cam then get a turbo manifold and ko3 turbo from a golf gti then need to plum in oil lines and an oil cooler now the oil is going through the turbo it's getting pretty hot. Them intercooler and pipes then u gotta look at engine management to up the fuelling and advance and retard the timing when on and off boost so u cam actually driving the thing. U will be in the project a £1000 before u know it

1 litre isn't a good place to start you've got tiny valves compared to the other heads and your engine is either going to be detonating or your gonna be melting your pistons, by all means go for it but like said youl get a more reliable power from a 1.4 16v engine conversion

You'd be surprised how easy and engine swap is with maybe a £50 investment in some star-drive sockets for the driveshafts and rental of an engine crane :)

whats the reason why you want to keep the 1ltr

its just making hassle for yourself , might as well start with a bigger engine , and the insurance will be hard on you whatever cc it is

well i mostly wanted to keep the 1.0 engine because of cheaper tax, i suppose it would be better to do an engine swap instead, i still want to turbo the 1.0L but il wait till i have a better money flow, thanks for the replies

If I'm correct the AAU is the 1l version of the AAV. If so it will be spi or single point injection. I had the AAV in my mk2f and I can tell you now spi engines are very hard to get more power out of all you can really do is change the plugs / ht leads, exhaust. Even cone filters are difficult to fit unless you nab a air intake off a abd 1.4 golf mk3 and block off the air temp sensor.

I looked into turboing my aav and could not find a turbo manifold for it. And the only way to supercharge it aka turn it into a g40 was to change the intake to either carb, bile carbs or mpi (multi point injection)

All In all if you have the aav or AAU power wise there is not much you can do without converting the inlet.

I could be wrong though the AAU may not be spi

Finding a turbo manifold may be difficult though

what the difference in tax cost 1.0ltr to 1.3ltr?

if it is not a gap of £1000 you have lost rational thought

i shall make sure to decompresss the engine so, its not a 1000 pounds no but over say 3 years itll add up, also my insurence will increase alot if i do an engine swap

so maybe spend the money on tax instead of rare /impossible parts for a 1 ltr
