Hi guys, first post on here, my girlfriend has just bought the above car, where the electric mirrors don't actually work, I've checked the fuse but strangely there is no fuse in the fuse box under the dash for this and there is no fuse holder in no. 17 which should be for the mirrors, there is a dial on the drivers door to control them but obviously nothing happens, it does however light up, so I'm presuming the light must be fed from another source and not just with the power for the mirrors.

So hopefully this is an issue which can be sorted out

As you have a 2000 model it could be either a 6N1 or 6N2 and the fuse layout is totally different, but niether use #17 for the mirrors!! The backlighting does come from a different supply, A common fault on either model is the wiring in the flexy tube between the door and the body, the wires break with the opening/closing of the doors, mainly the drivers door!

The easiest way to tell the model is the speedo display

Okay that makes sense it is the 6n2

The mirror supply is from fuse #26 (7.5 Amp)

Okay that is great I will check it tomorrow. So I take it that diagram on the back of the fuse box lid is incorrect? Does this fuse just feed the mirrors?

It also is the control supply for the electric windows (If fitted) If you can remove the mirror control switch and have a multimeter? you could see if the supply is present @ the switch plug pin 5 (Black wire)

Thanks I will look into this, electric windows do work, actually. However, the drivers side switch will only raise the passenger window and not lower it, possibly related, however I will look into what you have said and then report back if this is not solved.

The window fault could either be the broken wiring in the flexy tube as mentioned before or the switches as they are prone to water damage

Just going to look at the mirrors once home, noticed a strange thing on the polo both mirrors are different sizes the passenger is a stubby siZe is this normal?

Right I have just tested as you described on the black pin 5 and I have supply there, so would this point to the switch being faulty or could it be that there is a relay that is then fed from the switch? What do you suggest is the next step

There's no relays involved, the supply goes straight from the switch contacts to the mirrors, if it's not working on both mirrors it's probably the switch, if it works on the drivers mirror but not the passengers it;s probably the wiring between the door and body as mentioned before,

Just had a thought!! you have rotated the knob to select driver/passenger side??

Yeah have tried rotating it to the "L and R" To no avail can't even hear the mirrors trying to move, was just wondering if it's possible to just touch a link across any contacts or is that likely to short anything out?

And yeah as you've said, it doesn't work at all on either side

Unlikely that every cable has broke, apart from the supply cable I'd imagine

Ok you previously stated the backlighting was working so that also rules out a ground/earth problem,

If you put a link between pin 3 (Brown wire) and pin 6 (Grey/Lilac wire) and then a momentry link from pin 5 (Black wire) to either pin 9 (Lilac wire) or pin 2 (Red/White wire) this should make the drivers mirror move either up/dn or in/out

Okay update tried as you said and linked to them

Colours however at first the the passenger side moved, then I touched a diff colour to what you said and the driver moved, summing up that the switch is infact broken

Nige... As per your comment. I checked pin 5. Neither of my windows work. 

 

Pin 5 on the switch plug has no voltage. Does this mean that there is likley to be a break in the wiring in the door.

Gotta get that back in the connector unit... Is there a specific crimping tool or end bit that I need? I think i need to just push the pin out from the twist lock mechanism....

 

what's the best way to do this?

To extract the pins you need a two pronged extract tool that goes either side if the pin and pushes the locking tabs back.
