Am looking into the possibility of buying a mk2/3 polo, mk2 golf or caddy as a second 'project car' but this is all dependent on cost of insuring the bugger.

My daily is insured on a multi-car policy with the mrs and they want £500 to add a 1.3 mk3 as a 3rd car, which is the same price as my daily which is 15k miles a year kept on the road!

Based on that i won't be able to afford it, especially as that is without mods!

my question to the insurers that browse these pages, or people who have experience with this...

The car will stay in a locked Garage in GU14 (good area as far as I am aware)

The car will only come out for shows, on sunny weekends away or rarely to work if my daily is off the road for whatever reason. I estimate at no more than 2k miles a year.

I intend to mod the car - lowering, wheels but no ICE

As for me: I am male, 24 next week, license for 5 years, Nil Points, nil accidents and 3yrs ncb, I drive vans for work and am named driver on 2 other cars

Because of the low mileage and locked garage in good area etc I would hope that I could half that premium?

I really hope so because I have always wanted a second project car but not if it's going to cost me a fortune to never use!

What? Why don't you just get some quotes with that specified, though I severely doubt it'll half.

I'm just trying to get some advice on why the quote are so high!? surely the risk factor is a lot lower seeing all of the above factors.

There are 4 or 5 specialist insurers who read and post on here and I thought they might be able to shed some light on the workings of insurance companies :P
