So I've owned my 6n2 for a couple years now and been modifying it all the way through, the other day however the engine bay caught light down to an electrical fault I imagine... but theres no way i'm gonna throw away and scrap all my hard work! and so begins the GTI conversion... as i will need a doner car to get mine on the road why not upgrade...

first step was to recover my polo to my college workshop and begin stripping all of the burnt/melted bits.... thankfully it wasn't a big fire so inside the car is untouched, but wiring loom and engine had to be thrown away...

well done, keep it up.

So heres the doner car! 1.6 GTI with 80k's on the clock already started stripping the interior and engine is hopefully to be out by wednesday...

internets been down for a while but heres the update: engine is out of the GTI and have changed the clutch and timingbelts, the loom is out of the GTI and in my blue 6n2 also the front bigger GTI brakes/hubs have been put on and we have also changed the rear axle so it has rear discs now :) hopefully looking to get the engine in this week... anyone on here done a GTI conversion before? any key things i need to know before fitting the engine? and what did people do about the immobilizer/ECU's ? cheers

So the 1.6 is in, and its cranking and theres ignition lights on the clocks, but when you turn ignition on theres no noise from the fuel pump priming or any of the usual clicking noices from the relays/fuse box area... maybe something not plugged in or loose or something not to sure, anyone done a GTI conversion before? how did they get round the immobiliser??

Try splitting the keys open and swapping the chips inside that's what the immobilizer gets the code from. It should be a tiny black box with white writing on it. To test it out first hold the gti key up to the ignition as you crank with the original key. Best of luck with the conversion I'm planning something similar myself.

cheers mate wish id seen this earlier lol i decided to change the whole steering rack because you need some sort of tool to get the barrel off... so now the GTI key works with my car and my car also has the GTI ECU and GTI engine wiring loom but it still cranks and cranks and wont start... theres a transponder that goes round the barrel and has a 3 pin plug coming off of it but it does't plug in anywhere :s and i don't remember unplugging it.. so it must got into a loom that maybe later polos were fitted with?? I'm really unsure as its strange to have a transponder plug that doesn't go anywhere... any advice would be appreciated? i was thinking of changing the fuel pump relay as fuel seems to be problem here, but also need to check spark and if iv'e got nothing i may just send the ECU off to be de-immobilised? not that i really want to....

There will be a small black box next to the steering column, that is the immob box, the lead from the read coil around the ignition switch plugs into this

iv'e seen that on other polo's yeah but on both mine and the GTI theres no immobiliser box....

thats why I'm confused... my car doesnt have any box atoll and the GTI has a box but i think its just for the alarm as it doesnt have anywhere for the transponder/reader coil to plug... and even if it did the problem is its connect by the interior loom which is different for mine because mine doesnt have the plugs for a box and i cant change the interior loom as the GTI doesnt have plugs for a sunroof... so wouldnt be able to operate that, thats if going about it that way even works because there'd still be no where for the transponder/reader coil to actually plug into... and so the thing is if neither of these cars had immobilers equipped why is the engine immobilised? unless its a fuel pump relay that's gone but seams unlikely for it to just go at the same time as doing all this...

also my polo's had a scorpion alarm fitted at some point but didn't have the transponder plugged or tapped into it, so whether or not it worked as immobiliser or just an alarm i don't know but maybe the scorpion alarm needs to be matched/programmed to the new ECU? i'm not to sure tbh

All 6N2's had the immob box as standard from the factory, So the wiring will be there, regardless of sunroof options etc! that other box you have from the GTi will probably be the box for the remote C/L and factory alarm.

The engine ECU will automatically immobilise the engine until it receives a "GO" signal from the immob box, that's why you have the problem

Fit the immob box from the GTi, the wiring will be there!

i can't see any immoblier box though mate... thats my problem, i had a look on my mates 6n and it was there but not there on either of mine, not the GTI or my polo.. all there is, is the box i was talking about earlier which is for the alarm and C/L and that won't even plug into my interior loom anyway...

Well the 6N2 left the factory with the immob box fitted!!

ok so iv'e listen to what you've said that you're certain there was an immobiliser box so iv'e searched an searched and guess what... the box was screwed onto the back of the dash which i had stored at home to make space....i saw it there the other night and so unscrewed it plugged it in an she fired up! now all thats left is to rebuild the interior and front end...

Sortof road worthy atm... just need to sort a few issues like the exhaust and wheel alignment... but heres how she looks :)
