6N2 1.8 20v Turbo conversion.... Work in progress

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm Tony I'm the owner of a golf 4 1.8t gt28rs (tonybig78 on youtube) and I'm here to get some help with the 1.8t conversion I'm doing on my friends car.

I know this has been discussed before but even with my internet searching skills there is a lack of info regarding this conversion!

Now the parts i have:

Agu complete engine and turbo

1.8t side mount intercooler (not sure if if it fits)

ASD gearbox

mk4 golf shifter

ME7.5 ecu with wiring loom

9n 1.8t engine mount

I'm good with fabrication and wiring looms but i do need some help in a couple of areas.

firstly i need help with the sourcing wiring diagram...

secondly i was reading about not having to cut the chassis leg if i use an abf box can anyone confirm? be nice to know before i get the grinder out lol!

I have Vag Commander for the immo defeat although i have never used it for this! is it a bench jobby or can it be done OBD? (CAN NOW REMOVE FOR A CHARGE)

Any help is very much appreciated

Ill be uploading pictures as i go along. Thanks

Well.... That's the old engine and gearbox out! If anyone needs a reconditioned 1.6 gti box get in touch....

Manage to fit the mark 4 shifter pretty easily! Picture coming soon!

I tried using vagcommander on a 1.4 16v ecu (me2.7)and it didn't work, I would have had to take out a chip and use an eeprom reader to read and change a value to disable the immob.

That said on your it may well work, but I can't says for sure. Is it possible to plug it into your golf and try?

Mount wise, I have read that a lupo gti or perhaps a diesel gearbox mount will bolt up to the 02X gearboxes. I can't say for aure as I haven't done it but in theory it makes sense.

Also I a subframe from a diesel ( I think ) or lupo gti that use the 02 boxes have the right mounts already so this could make it easier?

Again I haven't done this so I could well be wrong

Why not just buy an Ibiza Cupra out of interest? Seat have done all the work for you.

probably because its an ibiza cupra and not a polo :-)

How many 20v polo do you see ? That said I haven't seen many ibiza cupra either

hi guys thanks for replies.....

Seat ibiza has nothing to do with the polo....totally different and if he really wanted an ibiza he would have bought 1. My friend has 2 and to be honest i really don't like the looks of them! old and outdated if u ask me the cupra r leon much better lines.

I've cut the leg today and almost ready for the fabbrication of the mounts!

Dixy vag commander only de immo the me7.5 that's why it didn't work for you! I'm no novice in the vag scene

This is the 9n engine mount! can anyone confirm if this is correct? engine seems to sit too high with this and the standard rubber mount!

hello, with regards to your drivers side engine mount, is that the 9n3 mount thats bolted onto the chassis? or the 6n2 one? also how stable is that mount with you spacing it?

looking to 20v next summer, but I've seen a few conversion mounts flying about and lookin into that now as to cutting the car up

thanks

james

Hi James yes it is indeed a 9n original mount! It cost me £200 from vw but u also have to buy the rubber mount in order to get the top braket! This conversion turned out to be a lot more work than I initaially thought! U really do need a lot of skills regarding the metal fabrication! In going to be uploading more pictures and I might even do a complete write up about what is and isn't needed! As for cutting.... I've tried most 5 speed geqrbox and engine combinations but it simply doesn't fit without chopping the leg! I'll show u what I mean when I upload more pics on Tuesday!

  • Author

The mount I used in the mock up was the original rubber mount from the gti but it's not what I used in the end! It was too low and wouldn't clear the subframe so I moved the engine up 4cm and back 3.5 therefore had to also modify the waste gate valve.

thanks mate, yeah I'm aware that most people need to chop chassis both sides for mounts then again for gearbox but some guy i know managed to get hold of some mounts so he's actually running standard 6n2 gti mounts but with a 20v in, basically the same as the 9n3 one that bolts onto the engine just a bit longer and thinner, bringing it further over to drivers side so he hasnt had to notch chassis as much, let me know how you go about mounts as I'm toying with a few different ways

  • Author

Thing is James u can't go any further to the drivers side as it will hit the servo! So doesn't really matter if the mount is thinner or not. It's literally 3 to 4 mm away from each side..... Show u what I mean when I bring the car back home on Tuesday! How do you plan to do your wiring loom?

Edited by tonybig78

ah yeah he's changed servo to ibiza one as they are smaller! and i will sending it off to Andy at arc id imagine, but not doing it for ages yet so lots of research between

Ok cool!

Any updates on the build pal???

Nice to see another 20vt polo heading for the road this yeah,,i just need to wire mine up and away we go but i dont want to pay silly money for 8 wires splicing lool

  • Author

Hello bud... Almost yes! Few more days at the most! It's a lot more than 8 wires if u look at the video will see! Only took me a day but about a week to find a clear diagram!

  • Author

U have to cut off the old big plug that goes to ecu and join the wires to new plug from donor! Then on the second part of the loom from donor (small plug) u need to cut off the 10 or 12 pin plug and join it to the old loom! Quite a bit not as easy as people say! At least I have everything working.... Abs... Airbag... Diagnostics port etc! How far u want to go depends on u! I'm an electrician and vw fanatic for now 16 years!
