Mk2 Coupe S (GT) track car in mars red, £900

Featured Replies

Sooo the time has finally come to sell my beloved giant-slaying track car. I still love it and will be sad to see it go, but I want a RWD track car and I've had this for 7.5 years so it's time to move on. :-(

Some of you will know this car from RR days or CP track days or perhaps a Nurburgring trip. I can't tell you how much fun I've had at track days in this car, and how many times people have come up to me in the pits asking what engine it has and seeming surprised when it's only running 100bhp and I'd just overtaken them out on track! :D:D

As a starter track car for a novice or just a cheap track car for someone on a small budget you really can't do much better than this. It's very nimble and easy to drive on the limit. As an example, my best recorded BTG time at the Nurburgring is 9:19, a full 40 seconds faster than Clarkson did it in the S-type on Top Gear! This goes to show that power isn't everything on track.

Anyway, enough with the sales spiel here's the spec of the car:

1986 Polo Coupe S with Polo GT engine and gearbox

Port & polished cylinder head, Schrick 268 cam, custom PPP ecu chip
Pipex cone filter, S/S 4-2-1 manifold and Longlife S/S exhaust system
Vauxhall Calibra ATE front calipers with 256mm vented discs & yellow stuff pads
G-laderseite Poly ARB blocks and TCA bushes
GMax suspension
Polo GT rear axle with ARB
Sparco Sprint bucket seat and Sabelt 4-point harnesses
Polo GT clocks
Stripped-out interior

Welded in strut brace between the rear suspension towers

Ronal 14x6j multi-spoke wheels with road tyres
BBS RD 14x6.5j 5-spoke wheels with track tyres (in red)

168,000 miles (top end rebuild at 152k see below)
MOT until end of October
Tax until end of July

Complete driver's side sill replaced in Oct '12
Passenger sill in good condition
Both sills repainted within the last year
Passenger side door has been replaced with a rust-free item I had re-painted
Driver's side door could do with being replaced

I'd be lying if I said it was mint - it's several different shades of red across different panels, and there are a few small rust patches in areas that don't affect the MOT, but it is a super-fun little track car that's ready to be used straight away.

Engine starts on the button every time, with no tappet noise, and doesn't use any oil or coolant.
P&P head and Schrick cam were fitted at 152,000 with new tappets & new valve stem seals, new timing belt & new water pump.

The PPP ecu chip retains the stock 6800rpm rev limiter, so I know I can hit the limiter on track without worrying. However, there is the potential to extricate a little more power from the engine should you fit a chip with a raised limit. However a generic ecu chip like the Poloace one would reduce power compared to this one which was created by Yoof for his own car when it had a very similar engine spec.

Bad points:

The panels that haven't been resprayed are quite faded so it is a motley collection of different reds

The driver's side door is quite rusty and could do with replacing

There are a few small rust patches (under the filler flap, where the passenger wiper arm mounts to the bulkhead, bottom of driver's side wing) but none of these affect the MOT

The glass sunroof leaks a bit if parked in heavy rain

However this is not a show car, this is a car to be driven, and these niggles don't really affect that.

Car is located in Cardiff, South Wales.

£1000 for the car & the track wheels (with 2 usable track tyres and 2 dead tyres)

£900 for just the car

I've also got various spare parts that I'll throw in for free if the price is right.

Feel free to ask questions on the thread or PM me. Please only call me if you want to come and look at the car.

SOLD! Sad to see it go, but pleased it's gone as I can now start looking for a replacement. Seems like it's gone to a good home though. Stef I hope you got home ok? That was a lot of driving to do

Oh I forgot to mention, the steering wheel in the pictures is not included as I will be keeping that. It will come with a Polo GT wheel.

Also, I have a second Sparco bucket seat the same as the driver's one, and also the original driver's seat, so there is the option to fit two bucket seats or both original seats if you want.

Here are some pics of the car on track:

I have had the pleasure of driving this and also following it round on track. It is one epic track car! If I was allowed another one I would buy it for myself!! :)

Forgot to mention that I replaced the distributor cap, rotor arm and spark plugs in April.

Yesterday I changed the oil and filter so it's got fresh 5w50 fully synthetic oil in it.

It's completely ready to be used on track, just add VPower!

Ooh this is tempting, my starlet is up for mot and may not pass, if so this would be my next option.

Will keep a close eye and maybe come see one weekend this month as i'm just in bristol.

I will be heading up to the Polo Show on Sunday in this, so if anyone is interested come and find the car at the show and I'll be somewhere nearby.

I'm planning to stick this up on Ebay next week if I haven't had any offers for it by then.

So if you're interested, now's the time to let me know.

Once the tax reminder turns up in the next week or two I can re-tax it for 6 or 12 months at the buyer's cost if that helps.

Is it still logged as a 1300 ? are there any track mods that would coz a serious problem for next MOT?

The logbook still shows the original engine (HK), but as the capacity is still 1272cc it doesn't cause a problem for the emissions test. In fact because it's injection rather than carb it blitzes the emissions test every time.

The only thing that might cause a slight MOT issue is the harnesses. I have had no problem with this as they are safer than normal seatbelts and all the places I have used have been fine with them. Some garages may not like them though.

Other than that I can't think of anything.

As mentioned in the listing, the driver's door could do with replacing and there's a little rust under the filler flap, but neither of these would cause a problem at the MOT test.
