Bobs GT Project

Featured Replies

Sooooo.... originally i was looking for a cheap gt engine that hadn't been to the moon and back to do a full rebuild on and stick it in something cool later on but i saw this and remembered the fun i had in my old GT and thought why not...

Shes abit of a state at the moment but i'm sure i will get there, i always think cars look better when they are as standard looking as they can be with only subtle modifications or colour coding so i'm hoping to put her 95% percent back to standard on the outside and spend a little bit of money on a few more horse power than standard...

She came with a few non standard bits too most of which i will be selling on here so keep an eye out in the for sale sections...

Anyway heres how ugly she is now!!!

As you can see shes 3 different colours at the moment, i'm not sure on the bodywork as the standard colour is the GT metallic blue and i really prefer the red, white or black ones but the paint job is way off yet...

The engine is the first port of call for me, i will be taking parts off and cleaning them up bit by bit ready to go back on the finished lump... I've had a lot of inspiration from a guy on heres build thread, Tav i think his name is... his thread is super informative and give me loads of ideas.

Parts purchased for rebuild so far...

Full head gasket set

timing belt kit + water pump

head bolt set

thermostat kit

set of exhaust valves

set of inlet valves

set of valve buckets

rocker gasket set

crank oil seals

had half hour earlier so ripped of the inlet manifold, throttle body and fuel rail ready to be cleaned up, also been reading up on dewedged throttle bodys so this will be the first mod i will be on with...

Full scale clean up operation on the manifold and maybe going to try smoothing the ports out for better air flow, also new injectors which i need to do a bit of research on first and dewedged throttle body, i will keep you guys posted...

Thanks matt thats been bugging me for weeks lol...

So far I've given the inlet manifold a quick clean up, was gunna buy a polishing kit but having looked closely at the manifold there are some major casting marks and would take a lot of prep work to get to the polishing stage so I've decided to smooth as much of the factory markings off and paint it a nice flat silver...

But I've been on with the throttle body and got it 99% done, i went a little OCD on this one, i have stripped it, wire wool polished the body, carb cleanred and took a tooth brush to the throttle position sensor and throttle linkage, replaced the vacuum pipe, dewedged the throttle body, sanded and smoothed the chambers for better air flow and even painted the TPS and bracket bolts... just need to paint the bracket and shes all done...

And here it is...

My plan is to make my engine bay look as standard as possible with a few old school mods maybe... found these for sale on here and had to purchase them...

Finally got the engine out of the gt so the rebuild has begun... on further inspection the shell aint very good so it will be taking a back seat for a while now while i concentrate on the engine, had to buy myself an engine stand and borrow a crane but the lump is out and looking a sorry state at the moment...

So far I've stripped the block bare ready for degreasing, cleaning up and painting, need to do abit of research into the best paint to use etc... been told hammerite paint is better than heat paint and may be able to get the block sand blasted to for better prep results... and also stripped the head ready for port and polishing, fresh skim, and some extra work planned...

On inspection of the bores, shell bearings and crankshaft there were no signs of major wear but i will still be replacing the bearings anyway, need to take a closer look at the oil pump for signs of wear and get some piston rings, shell bearings and a couple of gaskets ordered.

At the moment I'm saving up for a 268 road race cam and looking into how far i can go with the head modifications so hopefully more to come soon... i will have a few bits i dont need from this engine in the for sale section soon so look out for them...

Liking this thread, how is the progress? Looking to paint and clean my GT lump before it goes in my Derby. Be interested to see what products you have used.

Looking good mate. I've never tried stripping an engine down, too scared! ;)

Sadly I think this project got broke as spares a few months ago

hey guys sorry i aint been on here in a while, yea unfortunatly me and a mate started sanding the front end down and found the slam panel to be very poorly welded and filler in the engine bay so could only assume its been in an accident... plus for what the shell would of took to get it just ready for painting wouldnt have been worth doing as I've seen a few gt shells on here for £500ish... so yea I've sold the car off in bits, i still have the engine, box and wiring loom though so still going ahead with the rebuild... i fancied a derby to put it in but not in a rush for a shell at the moment anyway... might delete this thread and just start an engine rebuild one instead

thanks for the comments though guys
