Just joined the forum... Been into VW's all my driving life:

'69 passenger bus, (first car when I was 16)

'71 hard top westy,

'78 champagne edition bus,

'83 rabbit,

'84 vanagon,

'73 beetle,

'83 T25,

'72 beetle

'99 golf

And I'm only 29! Me and my wife met online in 2006 on a VW group on Myspace, shes from England, and me the US, I now live in the UK. We are sharing the golf at the moment, and have decided its time for a 2nd car. We are kind of fed up with problems that go along with the old air cooled VW's, even though we love them. We are not really into anything pre '90's. I do love the look of a Polo Breadvan though! The style with round headlights.

How reliable are these breadvans? I've read some people saying they are great cars, reliable, and cheap to fix. Then I've read others say you cant find parts, and if you do they are very expensive...

What say you all?

Hello and welcome, love your car history although we're on the same amount of cars and I'm 19

Mk2 Polos are great cheap motoring. Generally they are very reliable, although anything that age is going to want something doing now and then, but if you're into aircooled's then I presume your no stranger to a spanner! Parts are readily availed and cheap, places such as gsf will have most of what you'll ever want.

People moan about the 'pooburg' carbs, but if you set it up right they are fine, a webber is a good upgrade though! More power and mpg, win win!

Look out for rot on the body, the seams on floors near the front jacking points seem to be a weak spot, and of corse the fuel filler neck. If it's leaking there's no point bodging it, I've been there, just change the whole tank. But don't let that put you off buying a car, they're easy enough to change, and I got mine for £40 new!

All in all, awesome cheap and fun motoring!

Keep an eye in your local newspaper too, it's where the older generation, aka polo drivers, like to sell their motors!

I'm in a similar boat at the minute too, trying to find a clean standard mk2 GTi 3 Door, there's plenty about, but none that I want!

I'm officially a breadvan owner!

Took 4 hours by train up to Manchester, and a 200 mile drive back home, but it made it! Under 53,000 miles, and garaged all of its life, its a shame I can't garage it. The original owner didn't know if the cambelt had been done, so I guess that will be soon.

The only problems I could work out is that the tracking must be off, pulls a bit, and the steering wheel is not straight, I also read brakes on these are bad, they are definitely something to get used to! But in general I'm very happy. It has that classic feel like a beetle.
