Featured Replies

Model : February 1982 Volkswagen Polo GL

Engine : (Unknown at present , should be a 1.1 but told its a later 1.3)

Suspension : TA Technix shocks and springs 40mm

Brakes : VW II's and Drums

Wheels and Tyres : 13" Steels

Exterior Styling/Modifications : None

Interior Styling/Modifications : None

ICE and Security: Original Blaupunkt MW/LW Radio

I've had the itch for an early Mk2 for a long time but the right car never came along until now . Its been in storage for several years now until today and has quite a few jobs needing to be done before its back on the road . Only had a quick look but I ran out of daylight , so far

-No Brakes

-O/S window mech

-N/S door handle

-Runs a bit rough (dirty fuel)

-Several Lights not working

-Blow on exhaust

All in all i'm so happy with it , body is solid with minimal rust for a 32 year old car

Yep, the engine is a later one, if the alloy rocker cover's original, it's out of an 84/85 car. The airbox lid says 1.3, but they can be swapped. Take the lid off the airbox and if it's a single choke carb, it's probably a 1 litre, if it's twin choke, it's probably a 1.3.

You did well to find such a good un.

Let me know if you fancy selling the radio

Cheers

Cheers guy's for the comments, did a little more work today on it , still not a runner. Will give you a shout on the radio mate when I decide what I'm doing . Cheers Ad

Love it and a good find

very nice, the early GL breadys are a 1.1, code HB. Only the saloons are 1.3 until A reg when they brought out the HK engine

I didn't know there was a mirror blank available for the hole in the door card. Gotta get me some of those!

Thanks for the info mate , I've made some progress this week and it's now a runner , I discovered that it has a HZ 1043cc engine with a 1b3 carb . The issue with the running was the auto choke .I decided to scrap the 1b3 altogether and fit a weber 32tl and reinstate the manual choke. Had my fingers crossed as the weber was a ebay purchase about 12 months ago and was advertised as in good working order. Bolted on and the car started pretty much straight away. It needed a few minor adjustments and a return spring for the throttle . Next I got on to the lack of brakes . I discovered that the rear cylinders where shot so I've picked up two new cylinders and new brake shoes today and ordered a replacement aerial

Well made some progress with this, fixed brakes and other jobs and got it in for test on Tuesday and it passed no probs at all .

Put on some alloys from my other mk2 while I have the wheels blasted and gave it a good clay , Polish and wax and gave it a good 200 mile road trip out and it's been faultless .

Its been a while so thought I'd update my progress on the GL .

I've spent a fair bit of time going through all mechanical bits and everything has been fairly well maintained previously so all was good , I have been working on adding some period correct additions .
I was really lucky when a friend of mine put me on to someone who had a original NOS Polo graphic that was a dealer option from 1982-1984 so I jumped at the chance to buy it as the likelihood of getting another would be pretty impossible . I was talking to someone who worked for a local dealership in the 80's and they confirmed from memory that the decal was only available in grey/white or brown/gold . The correct option for my car would be the brown/gold , so I was extremely happy that the one I bought was correct although it was a nightmare to fit being as it was 32 years old . 20140818_201721_zpsuig1kvg6.jpg
Also fitted some scratch shields and some speaker pods for the front . 20140818_201813_zpsxwnr8rc6.jpg IMG_20140804_195812_zpsfv5pnnp5.jpg
Managed to find an original 80's Alexander alfa steering wheel cover . 20140915_150909_zpsllybwuyr.jpg
Currently fitting a aux in to a Blaupunkt ludwigshafen 18 head unit I've got to go in . IMG_20141004_133254_zpsnvaxetz3.jpg
I'm working on tidying up the engine bay too , was fairly clean to start with but it's a work in progress . IMG_20140909_225554_zpsenl1f6ce.jpg
The car was running it's original early brakes so I got some later VW1'S and refurbished them to go on , a massive improvement on what it previously had . 20140927_084559_zpsizjvofzz.jpg 20140927_084610_zpsb6si09a4.jpg 20140927_092132_zps1lcc5gko.jpg 20140927_092112_zpsarwlsm2a.jpg

Although when I first got it I thought it was either a 1.1 or 1.3 its actually got an early HZ 1043 in it , its running the earlier/bigger inlet manifold , electronic ignition , weber 32tlm carb , original formel e gearbox , original single box exhaust and Its not lowered 40mm its actually 80/60kit

This is gorgeous, so nice. What make are the speaker pods? I've never seen those before

The speaker pods I made myself from some a spare set of door pockets I had knocking about, got some pictures somewhere from when I made them , I will dig them out
