So you're getting fuel and spark?

Does the engine turn over easy/quick enough on the starter?

Are the leads set to the correct firing order?

Have you tried bumping the car to get it going?

  • Author

Yes I got spark at each plug and got fuel at injectors

Engine turns over fine as normal

Leads are in correct order

Can not bump as am on my own billy no mates etc

what brought this on?

died all of a sudden or wont start after a bit of tinkering ?

you can check the cam belt timing and that the rotor arm is pointing at number 1 cly

As said above, cranking speed on the starter can make all the difference between starting, or not.

What is the history of the problem. Did the car stop as you were driving, refuse to start one day or did it fail to start after you had worked on it? - maybe even on something that didn't seem to be related to the starting problem.

Remember the essentials, in order to start, the engine needs: Fuel (you have checked the injectors) Compression (this includes making sure that there is no obstruction in the air intake, that the valve timing is correct and, as we have already stated, a good cranking speed) Also a correctly timed spark (you have checked for a spark at the plugs, but have you done anything that could possibly altered the timing?)

You could re-check that the plug leads are in the correct order, but if they weren't I would expect it to at least back-fire!

If all of the above checks fail to give you a start, even with a fully charger battery, I suggest that you try disconnecting the exhaust at the manifold flange and attempting a start (you may need ear plugs if it starts!!) there is a REMOTE possibility that a blocked (waterlogged, for example) exhaust system is preventing your engine from breathing.

Any more information that you can provide might help us to come up with a more definitive suggestion.

Regards

No tinkering just will not fire up cam belt timing is out of my comfort zone lol , will look at manual again on timming ect.

Well it is off the road sorn etc and every week I turn it over and starts 1st time and let it tick over for 10 mins or so , but I went in for a brew came back and engine had stopped and has refused to start since . Battery has run out of juice so I charged it up over night and tried again but no joy.

Things that I have replaced and checked since refusing to start but will turn over

Battery full charged , reading @ mulitimeter 12.80

New plugs

New leads

New dizzy cap

New rotor

Check fuel to rail and injectors and we have fuel

took coil of other polo and tried on gt no joy

Thinking about changing fuel filter as its look like og one

I don't have much fuel in tank but enough so I always add fresh fuel as I know fuel can go off if left to long in tank .

If the belt LOOKS to be in good condition, it is tight and there are NO teeth missing for the full circumference, (put a chalk mark on it and check as you turn the engine by hand 'till you have been all of the way round) then it probably is OK, but it would pay to use your Manual and check the timing - just don't try to 'adjust' it if you don't feel comfortable doing that.

Regards

I hadn't seen your last item when I spoke about the belt, but from how you describe this, with the engine just stopping on its own, it sounds very much to me as if there may not be sufficient fuel in the tank and what you are getting at the engine end is aerated fuel.

Suggest that you try AT LEAST a 5 litre can of petrol in it and see what happens.

I want to but am not happy doing so it may sound as if I am scared as I am not wanting to make it any worse :-( shame no one can come and have a look etc ? as above I will pay cash

  • Author

Ok shall change fuel filter as good measure before I slam a petrol can of juice in . This will be tomorrow now so watch this space .

There is nothing wrong with knowing your own limitations, old mate - It's the people who dive in, not knowing what they are doing that are the real problem.

I think that the old saying, "Better live coward than dead hero" should apply to people working on their cars!!

Limitations I hate :-( but I will keep at it with the help of you good dude's :D

dont fear the cam belt

nothing can go wrong just checking it - take pics and we can confirm if its timed properly or not

just take out the spark plugs and use a 19mm socket on the crank to turn the engine clockwise until the marks line up - report back what you find

They all line up ?

rotor arm pointing at number 1 plug lead while thats lined up?

  • Author

Yes

are the plugs wet after cranking or bone dry?

my thoughts...roar some easy start in it , next step compression test

i take it youve toppped up the fuel ?

  • Author

Fuel in but took it all apart for photos before I gave it another crank , shall put it all back and top up with fuel and try again not sure how long I will be tho ..

Don't think I've seen it mentioned but does the fuel pump prime when you turn the ignition on?

If yes then try some easy start down the throttle.

If no then it could suggest a dodgy relay or the ECU itself has had it.

When you found the car had just died did you notice any funny smells? Burning? Coolant? Oil?

Do a battery voltage test while cranking. It could be your battery has 12.8v but only 20 amps when it should have 80 or so. Might not be the reason it cut out but could be part of a problem as to why it wont start. Deffo try easy start. If it fires up then dies down its a fuel issue.
