6n2 xenon light self levelling sensor retrofit

Just recently installed gti xenon headlights and the washer system to my car the only thing missing know is the self levelling sensor which I would like to retrofit

Does the gti have two sensors or just the one on rear axle?

Will it bolt straight on to my 1.4 axle?

As for the wiring is it just two wires which replace the wires at the current adjustment switch?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Did it on mine with the help of nige. Goes on back axle as it does GTI. 6 wires if I remember correctly some ignition feeds, some earths and some go to headlight switch.

I'm sure nige will be along to tell you exact connector pin numbers to where

The range control box has 6 wires going to it,

pin 1 Ground (brown wire)

pin 2 Ignition supply (black/red wire )

pin 3 Range Control ( red/blue wire, connects to the same coloured wire from original dash control)

pin 4 K diagnostic line ( grey/white wire, on Matt01's connected it to the same coloured wire on the radio)

pin5 Vehicle speed input ( green/white wire, connected to the blue/white wire on the radio)

pin6 Dipped beam supply (yellow wire connected to the same coloured wire on the original dash control)

Pins 3 & 6 might be the other way around as the wiring diagrams show both going to pin 6 ???

Only one sensor on the passenger side with a link rod going onto the axle beam

That's brilliant nige doesn't seem to bad to install just got to track down a sensor with the wiring know. I'm guessing the wire passes through the same route as abs sensors?

Matt01 thank you for your reply do you think the sensor makes a difference to the overall light output?

You won't really notice a difference to be honest as it's only for like when you go up a hill the lights will come down as to not blind oncoming traffic. Also as my car is lowered it doesn't really work as suspension is crazy ridgid, also the rod/arm on it is metal it's now seized in postion but the level is good for MOT so it's all good

Seem to recall there was a grommet in the area and then we run the wires down the sills and up the passengers footwell side trim and then across the dash, picking up the ignition supply from the back of the heater controls and the "K" & speed signal from the radio and then to the original dash control, the Ground point was on the rear light cluster?

Ahh right ok I think I'll do the retrofit if I find the sensor cheap enough just so it's all complete and mot friendly. Wiring seems simple enough I'll keep you guys updated if I get it done or not. Just wired my washer jets up with a relay so they only fire with lights on so this will really finish it off

@Nigel, you are so very right. The current flow diagrams are so damned wrong.
I was @ my garage today, i have also all diagrams on paper oem from the time before elsa.
You can say thats an analog diagram, you see digital isn't always better.
So i took a picture with my smartfone, here you will miss some faults there are in the digital diagram

I did that conversion with the 6N2 GTI Levelsensor in my 6N1 with original H4 lamps and i was happy to have the wireloom, so i didn't had to think about the single pins on the sensor or the connector under the rearseat.

Does anyone knows or assumes why the speedsignal is connected?

I know via diagnosticbus you can also read speed... but why? I can do that in the ABS ControlUnit too, but there it is for testing the 4 sensors, so why does the Level Sensor gets the speed signal?

anyone any idea?

The level sensor gets info from the speed sensor so it knows how fast to adjust the lights up/down. The faster your going the faster they adjust so you don't blind people with lagging lights

Oh i guess you're wrong.

The controlling is not dynamic as you know it from porsche for example where the headlights go up and down in realrime.

It works with big absorbability, so you fill up your boot, it turns down your headlights after it registrates that it was not just a short moment like a speedbump on the street.

It only corrects changes of inclinations cos of different loads in your car.

Thats how i know it.

Test it, turn on the ignition, sit down with 2 people on the boot sill and listen to the two motors in the headlights... it needs a couple of seconds till they start working.

And that won't change when you're driving..... thats my knowledge, when you know more for sure... hey, thats a discussion forum.

The control arm does that on the the leveller itself that's the whole idea of the load that you are on about with a friend getting in/out the car. The speed sensor has nothing to do with loads in you car or boot, the speed sensor feed is for the speed you are going so it knows how fast to adjust, I can see my lights physically adjusting when I drive so that's why I would say it works like that

Xenon headlights will constantly adjust with load in the botot or without up inclines down inclines all that crap bumps and what not that's the point of the leveler system. It's because there a much more focused beam meaning brighter for on coming say u hard accelerating frond end is lifted with the wieght of the vehicle going back so it the brings the light Down. So u don't blind people oncoming and to maintain optimum distance for the beam to spread, like Matt said if the cars lowered u can say good bye to this system evening working same with brake load sensor.

Also Christian u say test with two people sitting in the boot of course the motors will come on but that also proves matts theory on inclination as it works the same, also how to u plan to test if the motor come on while driving get some to hold on and hold the bonnet shut while they lay on the engine listening?

VW wouldn't of included the speed signal if it wasn't to be used for some form of dynamic adjusting??

Thats a technical information brochure from Hella.

Watch Site Number 2, on the top you read "Quasistatische LWR" with the normal sensor as you know it from vw.

And you know how "slow" the normal motors moves the reflectors.

For "dynamic LWR" see "Dynamische LWR" straight under it... there you see the type of motor and they write "only dynamic systems reacts on driving conditions, acceleration and braking, all happends within milliseconds, to convert that signals fast reacting step motors are used."

I did the following on my mk4, watch the videos to see how long they need to get completely down and up again via 1552, that slow motors can't compense the kind you drive, speedbumps, accelerating, braking and so on.

Scroll down a bit and watch both videos, than you just can and will agree with me.

I stay to my statement, Polo 6N2 and Golf mk4 and so on have no dynamic LWR, "just" (in 1999 it was hightec in a small car) that quasi-static LWR which only reacts on your load.

One thought out of a german poloforum from the beginning of that century was, that on higher speed the sensor assumes a country road/highway with no oncoming traffic and drives the lenses (in my case a reflectors) up a bit to see a bit better.

I have no idea, but i am thinking about to take my little signal-generator and connect it to the speed wire and regulate the speed up from zero to 200km/h (120mph) and watch the reflector reacting.....

says the static LWR only receives the signal to differentiate whether the car is standing still of driving constantly.

No i don't think you see your lights adjusting.

When you think they work, the street is just bad, on smooth streets nothing would happen, right? So are you really 100% sure that your 6n2 has got a dynamic LWR like porsche has them since a couple of years?
Don't misunderstand me, but that your headlights are adjusting when you are driving is something i cannot believe.

@mattieboi6n: now i am confused.

I did that, i hold my 1552 in my hands and was sitting on my boot sill and had a 30liters can of water in the boot at the same time.

After estimated 7 or 8 seconds the system reacted and showed the new angle of the sensor and the calculated inclination degree of the car and regulated the electrical tense down which leads to the motors.

Thats all output of my brainstorming for today.

Well they appeared to before I lowered it, now it's lowered though they don't even adjust if the boot is fully loaded or not :lol:

I can see what your saying but from that write up saying that the car will put the lights up the faster you go as it "assumes" the car is on a country road with no traffic, this is something I cannot believe as its surely a poor build on VW's behalf because 9/10 times your going fast on any road there is traffic so if the lights have adjusted up they will inevitably blind the oncoming traffic ?

isnt this sensor also used on cars that have dynamic adjusting? maybe vw just put it in as the manufacturer (hella?) instructed not bothering to add or remove bits?

i have the xenons, but haven't bothered with the level sensor, I'm very cautious with lights and pretty much always have them set to 3 when there are other cars around.

on my vauxhall, the headlights are connected to the traction control and abs, as well as the sat nav and trip computer. i guess they use the level sensors signals for traction related things? may be the same story here?
