Last week I did my oil change on my polo 1.2 and on starting the car the timing chain slipped.

So my local engine centre has replaced the timing chain,rails,tensioner etc and also done a head overhaul exhast guides,stem oil seals,,the car has only done 52k.This cost £580

Driving the car today I can hear a slight whirring when it goes above 3k rev's that I didn't notice before.Its not the gearbox,because you can just about hear it when you rev the car.

I've gone back to the engine place and they have had a listen,they tell me they can't really hear anything,and that it sounds normal for a 1.2 polo,but I don't remember this sound.

I was wondering if the drive belt tensioner has been damaged or not put on correctly,or the water pump,,the engine place is a reputable company and they tell me they have fixed 100s of these 3 cylinder polo's ,doing this job all the time,including the piston rings.

Can anyone shed any light on what it could be?

OK guys, has anyone removed a auxiliary belt of one of these. I want to check for play in the water pump and tensioner. And run the car for a few mins without it to see if the noise goes away.

Must be someone with a little guide or link to doing it, please??? :)

A mechanics stethoscope would help you to detect any noises without dismantling - these are not expensive, but you can improvise by using a length of dowel rod or a long screwdriver, one end placed in your ear, the other on suspect items like the waterpump, alternator, tensioner etc.

I'm sure I've got a length of dowel in my shed, good idea. I tired to remove the belt today, but the star head was rounded on the tensioner.

Actually just had a look on eBay and noticed the stethoscope are actually really cheap.

Do you know if new timing chains can whin?

Also the engine place out 15/40s oil in the car, the spec says 5/30s.Not sure if it's to do with that.
