Hi, thought id share my experience of getting my polo remapped.

Car:

2000

Polo 6n2

1.4tdi

Engine AMF

56k miles at the time

Went to JBS which is in Chesterfield on an industrial estate, i had it booked in for a stage 1 Custom Code Remap and Dyno before and after which was £250 and £66.

Took it there and handed them the keys and heard it revving up on the dyno and felt nervous! The guy came to me not long after and told me my Mass Airflow Sensor is dead and was making 60 hp lol.

So 2 days later i went back as they couldn't get the most of the engine without a functioning MAS. They never charged me for that dyno or the 30 min of labour so i got them to fit it (which they didnt charge me for anyway as its a 10 min job).

Anyway, went back watched this time. He swapped it over in no time and started dyno'ing it before. They do it in 4th gear from 1500rpm to 4.5 ish as its the closest to 1 to 1 ratio.

The engine was running at 70 hp which is a little lower than the factory new 75 hp but its 14 years old.

Also the weather (25'C) / operator / fuel (i use Esso Ultimate) / etc can all have an impact on figures

He uploaded the remap, unlike i thought, a CustomCode remap is just a name, all they do is upload it, i didnt see him tweaking it as i thought they did.

He dyno'd it twice and a load of black soot came out which was normal as it clears out the system and EGR as theres more gasses flowing through.

Heres the results;

Before:

HP = 69.1 hp

Torque = 146.6 ft-lbs

After:

HP = 103.9 hp

Torque = 197.3 ft-lbs

Overall driving experience is a lot more responsive at lower revs, power is at 1500rpm+ a lot nicer and easier to drive.

I will report back on mpg figures when i fill up.

Currently on a 30 mile approx motorway drive each way to work + a little town driving at weekend I'm getting 74 mpg consistently. Which is usually 500+ miles before i fill up and usually fill up around 33 litres.

Yeah the 6n2 1.4tdi is a 3 cylinder. The mpg figures are before, ill let you know soon what I'm getting now.

Hey there guys . This looks a real good advantage only thing is where you said you get around 500 miles to a tank I to the same polo 6n2 1.4 3 cyl on amf code . I'm getting 720 to a tank !! And as far as I'm aware this car is perfectly standard considering it came from an elderly gentleman so I think il be getting mine on a rollin' road sharpish !

720 to a tank?? how much mileage do u have sir? do some polos come with a bigger tank?

Well the fuel tank capacity of the tdi is 45 litres. So a return of 720 miles to a tank of 45 litres does coincide with the 72 mpg quoted by the OP.

I myself have never had anywhere near that return on my polo and as far as official figures go 72 mpg is way above the expected mpg return. You are into bluemotion territory there! I am usually running around 55 mpg consistently and that is about standard giving the official quoted figures are usually optimistic.

If you guys are genuinely having 72 mpg return consistently I want you to cast whatever voodoo magic you used on my car.

Iv never really wanted to see how much i can get to the tank incase i run out lol.

I'm getting 70+mpg when doing motorway miles. Stay around 60-65. Theres roadworks the way i go for 20 miles ish so I'm doing 50mph.

Just drive it gently, change gear asap, dont go above 1800rpm if you can help it. Never use full throttle unless you have to. So no racing! Only accelerate as fast as you need to.

When on the motorway try not to overtake, stay behind a lorry, or go slightly slower than everyone, that way you dont have to move. If you overtake you use a lot of fuel.

I rest my foot against the side of the footwell and on the accelerator so I'm not constantly accelerating/de accelerating etc.

Remove all unnecessary items from the car. Have it serviced, correct tyre pressures.

I also use Esso Ultimate Diesel, which i believe increases mpg. I used to use tesco cheap stuff and never got above 70.

I did what Chris didn't wanna do I filled it to the lip and drove it until I couldn't start lol . My milage is 36709 genuine services miles as I explained it comes from one old gentleman who could barely get a grip on his walking stick never mind grip the steering wheel and hit the pedal through the floor . My engine is absolutely immaculate . I've been told that the 3 cyl 1.4 tdi is one of the strongest pd engines vw managed to make from a guy who works in VW that was nice to know considering all I hear is people slate the 3 cyl engines .

Well I bought mine on 20 odd thousand and it is now on 94 just 4 years later! It has been serviced every year, which is a minor expense really. But I have had no issues from ti what so ever. Only things I have had an issue with is a cracked sump on two occasions. No fault of the car, just the owner for going stupid low! Has taken me back and forth to Germany countless times without an issue. Driven for periods of 14 hours constantly without a splutter. There really isn't enough good things I could say about this car.

I may possibly move to the states in the near future and am genuinely considering taking the car with me! I am out here currently and to be honest the car market out here is severely lacking in anything European! (Partly because of the price of European cars over here). So a nice BKD engine swap is in order I think and ship it over here. Some Brit dub destroying American Muscle!

Quick update, after driving to work and back after a full tank iv been getting a little over 74 mpg. That is with 50 miles of town driving/short journeys and motorway traffic, stop starting.

Ill keep updating as i get a better idea. Some weeks i can go just driving to work and back so this will be the most accurate.

In my opinion I'm getting a lot better mpg around town

I've just done a couple of tests ; I got only 40mpg doing 86mph on an empty motorway but with a dead MAF that was throwing an implausible signal code. I swapped the MAF and then got it up to 50mpg doing 60mph ish highway driving with some overtaking.

It will probably get better once I swap the MAF which came from a 2.5 TDI T4, for the genuine version I have coming in the post.

Are you sure you're doing the maths right? If so then holy ****!

The best tank I've had from the 1.2 AWY 9N was 52MPG which was 100 miles of motorway and the rest was driving dual carriageways between Worthing and Brighton, with about 30 miles of town driving thrown in.

My driving usually consists of 70% town and 30% B-road buzzing, which returns about 38MPG to a tank.

The difference is your driving a 1.2 petrol. They couldnt pull the skin off rice pudding and need you to accelerate more to even get them to go

My tdi (not mapped) usually gets me a decent 60-65mpg on the regular. Well it used to until I did a EGR delete/straight through and decat, not sure what I get now but not that

In theory that shouldn't affect your mpg too much, just a faster spooling turbo/more power/lower EGT. Unless you use the extra power...

Yeah response is so much better so finding the right foot tends to get planted more often!
