dash swap?

Featured Replies

So i think i saw a pic of KIZ's dash swap in his mk2f with an Audi TT one. I'm quite liking the idea of doing something like this, so the question is can anyone direct me to / does anyone know which dashboards would fit with preferably the least amount of modification. Build/install threads would be a godsend. Thanks in advance folks.

I was also looking to do this but it seems like its purely a trial and error process. A lot of dashboards will be able to fit, I'm just not sure which will take the least modification.

I've seen various dashboards in the mk2f's including the TT, 6n2, mk3 & 4 golf and I'm sure there's more. You'd have more luck searching the euro (German, dutch, polish, etc) forums for a build thread as no one I know of who has done a conversion who drives a RHD car has a build thread or posted any info.

I wanna attempt a dash swap but just can't decide on what dash I like the most, was considering a corrado (might be too wide) or a golf 3.5.

Yeah I figured that most dashboards would fit in with a little/lot of cutting, chopping and probably fiberglassing. Choosing the right one is a pig tho, picking one that suits the car, one that's not too modern or too dull. I was looking at lancia ones but then I was thinking I'd prefer something with a double din to fit a sat nav. I don't know really, any help/inspiration would be nice.

If you want something with as little modification as possible your out of luck, there just isn't anything. Anything will mean a rewiring of the loom which is the hardest part. I've said to everyone who has asked me "how hard was it to fit the dashboard in" the easy part is taking a saw to the plastic and trimming it to fit. The hardest part is making it all work as without that your going backwards and it's pointless.

The TT dash my car previously ran was very hard to get working 100% with all the sensors and switches associated with the instrument panel.

With regards to choice I made a mistake- the TT wasn't very good. The mk2f is a small car and fitting an intrusive dashboard of that size impacted on cabin space. The gear linages to move the gear lever back was a nightmare as keeping its original position was not possible. So bare that in mind when you pick one, I changed to the 6n2 dashboard to allow myself legroom more in keeping with the original dashboard for both myself and the passenger and it was much simpler with less depth chopping and less width taken.

It's not for the faint hearted a dashboard conversion and certain one I wouldn't take on if my car wasn't aiming to be something more than ordinary.

Here is a photo of the dashboard at last years edition 38 show

Nice one Kiz. I have been pondering about the electrics, I'm think maybe id be better off finding a similar dash that looks cool and fiber-glassing my one. but i despise fiberglass, oh well.

Is it just me KIZ or does the steering wheel seem very flat?

I bet the 6n2 dash suits the car a lot more too.

not sure what you mean max??? its due to be trimmed before i bring the car out again as i do think it looks understated in black

I think he might be referring to the angel of your wheel??

Lol,

I think it may be just the angle you took the picture, looks like the wheel is sitting like that of a bus, flat instead of upright. Did you play around with the steering Column?

i think its just the angle of the photo. it doesnt help that the steering wheel is actually slightly crooked - previous owner of the wheel must have driven round like a gangster- then crashed it in whilst in the same pose
