Hello, I imagine it'll be the same people who look at this that followed my Mk2 jetta thread so a little catch up.

I sold the Jetta about 4months ago and have regretted it ever since!

I bought an MX5, as the saying goes, " once you go jap you never go back", well here I am again!

Sold the mx5 as it just wasn't me, a lot of fun though! I'd been after a nice Mk2 GTi 8v for about a month, until today!

Here it is -

Saw it on autotrader at a good price, and bought it back this afternoon, at an even better price! 110k, 11months mot and a few months tax too, bonus.

It's lowered on springs, soon to change and the ATS wheels will be changing too, in favour of something in 16".

The body isn't perfect by anymeans but tidy enough, I'll be sorting that out. It's solid and that's the main reason I snapped it up.

After having my Poverty spec Jetta this is real strange, such as I didn't know some mk2s came with a interior light delay!

It easily keep up with the pace of my 5 of not faster, which I wasn't expecting at all, surprising quick.

First job was giving the interior a good clean!

The interior is in real nice shape!

Factory elecy windows, ohh yeah!

Next jobs are new rear disks, and n/s rear wheel bearing is abit noisy!

Then replace the gear linkage ball, it's alittle sloppy

So anyway, back in a VW !!!

Agreed looks clean so much luxury for back in the day. But still no where near as cool as a jetta golfs just are just missing something mainly a huge boot looking forward to seeing what undo to it

Just the usual stuff really, gunna get it sitting nice, then work on making it look alittle smarter, then performance stuff. Got an exhaust on the way, gunna look for a cam too.

So, a rear wheel bearing had gone and the rear brakes were nackered, had newish pads in them but the discs had rotten. With 11months mot on it I thought this was alittle strange lol. "Rear brake discs corroded" has been an advisory for the last 3 MOTs, lmao.

Look at the state of the inside of the O/S disc!

Only to find that the O/S caliper does nothing when the handbrake it applied, need a new one. MOT'd a month ago right...?

It had the O/S driveshafts done for the MOT, even though both the N/S ones have a tiny split each. Job for another day.

So then I took it for a nice drive to rugby to bed then in, check out this MPG!

I doubt its very accurate, although I was driving like a granny! Then there was a kid in a modified clio so it soon reduced

My gear complete linkage repair kit came so that's a weekend job.

Really glad to be driving a VW again!

You want some mk4 rear calipers.. I run them on my jetta and on my g40 and they're spot on..

Also I had a cam in one of my old gti's and it was awesome! I can't remember the spec on it though..

I agree with the mk4 calipers or the polo gti ones there the same and can get a beam for 80 quid and then u get ball bearings instead of the taper roller bearings just all round better design and less partial to seizing. Run em in my jetta,polo and the old mans Rocco. Also agree with the cam the make a huge diffence in these the engine is already fairly beastly. Really do love the whole mk2 range though be it golf or jetta gotta be 2 of the best cars vw made

Ah, I hadn't though of that lads, do they take the same pad? Fit onto the MK2 carriers?

I've just put new disks, pads and bearing on it so I'm not changing it all again Matt!

Just sold my mk1 golf, that had a piper 282 in it with a TSR head and 2l bottom end. Bloody flying machine!! Lad who bought it has put it on a stand alone ecu, he's hoping for 170bhp

Just drove this in the wet for the first time, hasn't rained for ages and it's really greasy out there! Bit of a challenge to drive it hard

They defiantly feel a lot more than 112bhp IMO.

I dunno if the fit the mk2 carriers I would guess the do and the the disc and pads must much the carriers and stub axel so there a chance they will fit and work tbh, haha fair enough not changing it all again. The old mans Rocco is a 1.8 8v and that thing flys hoping to do some head work with cam and 4 branch should be quick enough then.

Yeah it has PAS, kinda wish it didn't though. My Jetta didn't have it and I found that was easy enough to park, that was a small block though.

It's not loud, a nice subtle note, just what I wanted and I've never been a fan of twin pipes, so I'm a happy chapy. Might all be in my mind but it seems to rev abit more freely too.

Bought some new coilovers and fitted the rears, well I supervised my 15yr old cousin doing it

Only took us 1.5hrs, not bad been at it was a completely new learning curve for him!

We ran out of time, so fronts will go on at the weekend.

Also fitted a red stripe grill with GTi badge, and some better spots off a MK1 grill I had lying about.

Got a few more goodies to fit too

Well! Abit of an update, the calliper that was playing up has fixed itself!

The other week I turned up to my mates place to come out and find water running down the street! Level looked good so I thought nothing of it. Later that day she started getting hot so I pulled over and shit loads of steam was coming out the tank! Let her cool, topped her up and off we went! Next few days it was drinking like nobody's business.

The headgasket was done just before I bought it so I was thinking maybe they hadn't done it properly. But there wasn't any fluids mixed and no white smoke/steam out of the exhaust... So I drained the water, pure water ffs, checked the system for blockages, then as the thermostat is the cheapest part to change I did that. Wow, I got soaked, the floor was wet to begin with but I had the hose out flushing the system

So after dropping the pas pump and bracket a new stat was in.

Refilled the coolant, 50/50, and job done!

Turns out the stat was playing up, pressurising the system making it all dump out of the expansion tank breather! So maybe the previous owner did the H/G for no reason. Anyways I'm so glad it was as easy as that!

I think so to, going to get them refurbed, question is, do I keep the whole centres black or polish the spoke faces!!
