You could try the 'generic' method :

1) Locate first gear (it may well not be in its normal position)

2) Keeping it in first gear, adjust the linkage to bring the lever to its normal position for first gear.

3) Locate reverse gear (as you did for first)

4) Adjust linkage to put the gearlever in its normal reverse position.

Other gears SHOULD then be in the correct position.

BUT

You are likely to have to repeat the above several times, hopefully making smaller and smaller adjustments each time.

I tend to start with neutral, then find the rest from there. Put the box in neutral (you can feel it's in if you wiggle the rod). slide the linkage on. Get the stick in about the right place, then do it up. Make sure you've got all the gears (reverse normally disappears). Get back under and fettle it as you need to. Go for a drive, then readjust.

Or take the linkage off, slap the box in third and slip the clutch to work

I tend to not follow any guidelines and just randomly set it, jump back in car and see if you can get all gears.

If not just adjust randomly again and see how it is after that.

set it up in 3rd might be your best bet - I always set the 5 speeds up in 5th

Loosen the 13mm clamp nut and bolt so the linkage rod moves freely in and out of the clamp

Put the box in 3rd gear from under the car (not sure if just pushing the linkage forward selects 3rd gear on a 4-speed? Otherwise twist clockwise and push forward)

put the linkage in 3rd - don't know if it's the same as putting it in 5th on the 5-speeders but I put it far right and as far forward as it'll go

Go under the car and see how much of the linkage rod is poking out of the clamp - usually it's quite a lot. Push it back until about a quarter of an inch is showing. Tighten the clamp bolt up

See if it works. Works well on the 5-speeders. If that doesn't work, try it with first gear instead
