6n2 Gti Air Con Probs

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm hoping to have posted this in the correct section, please move if not?

I have a problem with the wife's car and the Air Con (VW Climate)

Just had it regassed and it's still not working. I did a quick scan which orginally came up with Pressure Switch (f129) which is usually associated with low gas etc so cleared that and thought all was good the f129 fault isn't reshowing.

Alas not, I still recon the compressor is goosed but would mind some help confirming it. I got these live readings just now:

0.0 Comprossor Shut-Off
221.0 Measured Value
218.0 Specified Value
220.0 Flap Position (air flow to footwell)
40.0 Flap Position (air flow to defrost.)
22.0°C Outside Air Temperature (G17)
8.5 % Sunlight Photo Sensor (G107)
12.05 V Fresh Air Blower (V2 - specified)
12.16 V Fresh Air Blower (V2 - actual)
13.66 V Voltage (Terminal 15)
Voltage A/C Clutch (N25)

As you can see, there appears to be no voltage to the compressor clutch and it's constantly saying the compressor is off (even though you can hear it engage)

Thoughts please? And how much of a ***** of a job is it to do?

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm not quite with what you are saying here - If there is no voltage at the compressor clutch, then the clutch can't engage, so you WOULDN'T be able to hear it.

Normally, when the clutch fails to engage, it is caused by either low gas pressure or a faulty pressure switch.

You could check the clutch by arranging a temporary (VERY temporary) 12 volt supply to it to see if it engages - Don't be tempted to run it like that though - the clutch is there for a reason!

If you are something of a contortionist, you could also try bridging out the pressure switch (again temporarily)

The only other thoughts are: (1) You have checked the fuse, haven't you? (2) Are you sure that there is still enough gas in the system? - Did it work when the gas had JUST been put in?

Regards

Thanks very much :-)

Ok, when I had it regassed yesterday it didn't seem to get very cold at all yet I could see the compressor working when first started then it stoppped a min or so later (I saw the compressor stop working)

Honestly, due to the fact the climate is lit up and working I haven't checked the fuse (shame on me!) Where is it?

when i scanned it, It initially came up as a faulty pressure switch probably due to the initial lack of gas? And it hasn't appeared again since I cleared it.

I'm confused by the Vagcom readings though? When on the compressor gives a reading of 0, and when the system is turned off it gives a reading of 7 (No idea what these relate to)

Also, then theres the lack of voltage thing to the clutch?????

I hate broken aircon! Lol

The fuse is the most rearward of the 4 fuses on top of the positive battery terminal and should be red / 20 amps

You might find my thread a usefull reference http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=333895&hl= in there, there is reference to a document which explains the various operating modes

For me, having the ability to test the clutch by applying an external 12V supply was one of the most important tests, and you don't need to have the engine running to see / hear that.

Thanks for that. The fuse is all ok, however strangely when I removed it the fan started instantly.

I can see and hear that the clutch is engaging and going round so I'm guessing I must have been reading vcds wrongly. (Sorry for the bad info, it doesn't help you people who are trying to help me!)

I'm off to have it leak tested and make sure there's enough gas in it. Although it was vacuum tested when filled apparently that means nothing.

I've been told about a pipe at the front which a favourite for leaking but who knows till it's looked at again?

It's one of those problems that's annoying me now and I have it in my head that it MUST be fixed. Lol

I think the fan engaging when you removed the fuse was just coincidence. did you look at the Climatronic self diagnostic document linked in post 11 - it gives more information than you get out of vcds and you can watch the system changing operating mode which can give useful insight as to what is going on ?

I tested via the instructions posted and it said it was reading 0.0bar of pressure so I went to another air con specialist who again tested the gas pressure.

The low side when running was reading 80psi, far too high and it was suspected that either there was too much gas in the system or the compressor was broke.

Turned out there was 580g of gas (5g over) so that was emptied and replaced with 550g and still not working.

Looks like the compressor is at fault so I've had the system emptied ready to replacment.

If I can find a good, working one cheap!!

Thanks for the help.
