I have fitted a universal central locking kit, it has a wire for flash when pressed. it is a brown wire.. I tried attaching it to the only other thick brown wire I could find but got sparks and smoke so that came off...

what do I wire this to, to get my hazards to flash on?

I would think it needs wiring in to the Hazard Light Switch, but it depends on the unit itself, here is a diagram for the switch:

I'm sure nige would be able to shed a bit more light, but you might be able to work from that?

Brown wires on the car will be EARTH wires (connected to the bodywork)

Brown wires on your central locking kit could be just about anything, depending upon where it was made and what market it was intended for.

As suggested above, maybe it should go to the hazard warning lights, as without that, there probably isn't any power to them to make them flash.

Yeah, I'm sure it has to be connected to the hazard switch but I couldn't get the cover off.. And sorry but that wire diagram looks incredibly complicated, I don't get that at all.. Does anyone know what colour wire it is behind the fuse box cover I'll just join it to that. Thanks!

I don't think that you need to get INTO the hazard switch, I suggest that you try (but be prepared to remove this connection if it fails to cure the problem) connecting the brown wire from your C/L kit to the black/green wire that comes from pin 7 of the hazard switch - If your central locking kit sends out a flash when you press the button, at least this will connect it to the bulbs.

I tried connecting it to the only black and green wire and it attempted to put the wipers on..

Try it on the black wire with a white tracer, that one should make the LH lights flash.

I connected it to this and nothing happened...

Maybe it's time to find out if there is an output at all from this brown lead in the kit.

Suggest connecting it to a bulb (preferably 21 W or over) and the other side of the bulb to earth.

If that brown wire is an output intended to operate the hazard lights, the bulb should give at least one flash when you operate the button to lock/unlock the doors.

I assume it has because it tried turning on the wipers when it was connected to the wrong wire.

If the Brown wire from your locking unit does give a pulsed 12v when locking/unlocking then you'll need to connect it like this, but you'll need two IN4001 or similar diodes from Maplins/ebay etc. you need the two diodes otherwise all indicators will flash when you use the normal indicator switch, and connect them with the WHITE band facing towards the Black/white & black/Green wires.

Ok, thanks. So its the white and black wire that's behind the hazards switch. It looks like I'm going to have to get that off again then. It started to damage the surround when I tried pulling it off. Its really stiff for some reason. The others come off fine. I'm not bothered about all indicators coming on, that's fine but thanks for letting me know about the diodes.
