I finally got my car running again. New coil, cap, rotor, distributor, plugs, ht leads and now its back on the road!

But now it seems like it has slow/hesitant acceleration. Before being down for a couple week its seemed quite quick, even getting up to speed on the motorway, but now its struggling to get up to 60. And with a 2nd person in the car it really struggles. When accelerating it seems to try, hesitate, and then take off, if that makes any sense?

I'm feeling cursed with this car.

maybe timing is out after dizzy was put in

The mechanic said he did the timing, It sounds really good when idling!

You have to try harder than that to get banned!

A mechanic would surely have used a timing light for the dizzy.

Sounds like not enough fuel reaching the engine (or too much air).

Even a 1 litre should manage more than 60.

possible causes

Fuel pump dying.

Air leak at carb base (does carburettor wobble when grabbed?).

Partial blockage in a carb jet.

its a strange one is the spark plug cap correct strange i know but i have known this to cause a problem

hmm. Its got a brand new fuel pump (thats what caused the oil leak recently)

When I driven before this it would easily get to 70.

Spark plugs are all fine.

I was scared about a carb problem...

got to be a fuel related problem then check the mechanic has not kinked any fuel pipes

underneath could be possible if its been on a 2 poster ramp or tank had been removed for some reason

You can see the fuel leaving the filter

Does your polo have points and condensor? One if the polo jedi's will have to weigh in here but if it does, would the points gap make a difference if it was out? And could the condensor cause lack of power if knackered?

If your new pump is not passing enough fuel, that would account for the lack of top speed. The PRESSURE of the fuel to the carburettor is regulated by the thickness of the pump gasket BUT if the pump is not delivering enough VOLUME, the problem could well be due to what OAP is saying.

The problem of it trying to accelerate, hesitate and then get going, COULD be due either to the accelerator pump not working, or the accelerator pump jet being blocked, however, this would NOT account for lack of top speed.

Nope no points. I have no idea about the gasket either... I just dropped the car off with the shop that did the fuel pump, hope to have it fixed tomorrow. I don't think I had this problem when I collected it after the new fuel pump...

I think in 6 weeks the car has been used like a week...

mine has been laid up for 5 months and only used for 4 days due to faults now it needs a hall sensor of dizzy got a spare but cant seem to work out how to replace it

I ended up just giving a new distributor to the local mechanic and having him chuck it on for me. Far too busy to even wash the car...

All sorted.

Took it to a mechanic I trust last night. The garage that did the distributor did the timing wrong, and was told it was "massively out" And the accelerator cable needed tightening it up, so it was making it so I hit the floor too soon.

Quite happy now.

happy days mate i replaced my hall sensor and still no spark got power to everything well over 1200 quid spent now on rebuild and only used for 4 days its got 12 months mot 6 months tax I'm well gutted i think its ecu related might end up for sale or a breaker yet

I've felt like giving up, dont do it!
