6n2 GTI 6 speed conversion

Featured Replies

Hi this is a bit of a long shot but is anyone able to give some information on getting a 6n2 GTI to run a 6 speed box?

I've recently done a GTI conversion on my 1.4 6n2 and the engine and box were on about 90k and the box doesn't look like its been touched, iv'e heard the GTI boxes give up around 80k so mine probably doesn't have much life left, I've seen a couple 6n2 GTI's with 6 speed boxes but no ones really explained whats been done, I think the boxes are from the 6 speed Lupo GTI? an I think the lupo's use hydraulic clutches? that would mean changing the pedal box and fitting all the other components from a lupo (clutch master cylinder, lines, ect?? ) basically i'm just after a bit of advice or if anyone could refer me to someone whos taken on this conversion before? any information is appreciated thanks :)

I'm sure the 6 speed gearboxes are big block fitment so you would need the engine block to match from the Lupo also

Rich did this conversion but has since been kicked off the site

as said you would need the engine too and I think know he might of used the lupo sub frame but not 100% sure

cheers guys, so is there any other 6 speed boxes that can go onto the 6n2 GTI 1.6 16v engine with an adapter plate or something?

Adapters - You would be the first to use one (afaik), so possibilities are endless - 7 speed sequential? :).

You would need a 1.4 or 1.6 16v block from a golf or bora etc.

you would need the subframe and pedal box from either a lupo gti or a diesel polo (I think) and the gearbox mount from the lupo Gti, you can buy this new, which is a lot easier then trying to find a used one, or making one.

The lupo gearbox is a 02T which is narrower then a 02j (golf 6 speed) - I'm not 100% sure if you will need to chop away the chassis leg to fit a 02j as I haven't been able to find anyone who has tried, but the lupo box will defiantly fit without mods.

I am trying to collect the parts to do this myself, but I might just give up and use a 085.

The sixth gear I'm not too fussed about, but it would be cool to have, I want it mainly because the three shaft gearboxes can take a bit more abuse and there are a lot more ratios available. That said you could even use a five speed. Plus they have a hydraulic clutch, which is nice I guess.

Edit - also you will need the lupo gti (or possibly diesel polo) gear linkages, and as above the hydraulic lines etc.
