Hi all, I would like to change my cig lighter power so it's only on when the car is on. Currently it stays on all the time and since I have a wireless charging dock plugged in, it means it's always drawing power if I forget to take the the usb adapter I have out of the socket.

I read somewhere that it's a case of switching two of the fuses around that connect to the socket but that may well have been for a different car and not applicable. Could anyone advise me if this is possible and how I might go about it?

No quick swapping of any fuses will make it only live with the ignition ON only a rewire behind the fusebox will achieve this

My Polo 6n2 also has this problem. This sucks because my dashcam doesn't automatically turn off now.

I'm planning on installing a second socket and use the 12V cables that are also used for the car radio. Or is this not recommended?

The ignition "S" contact supply for the radio is only a low current supply (thin wiring) so I personally would not fit a ciggy lighter style socket as someone will accidently plug a higher current device into it and blow the fuse/melt wires, better to fit unique plug n socket just for your camera supply

On the 6n2 and late 6n there are 10mm nuts under the firebox, one of these is switched power, and is the main one so if you run a fused line to a new socket in the glove box etc, or chop the wire at the current one and replace with is then it will be fine, assuming the wire is thick enough to handle whatever your plugging in.

But as nice says above, to do it in a factory manner then it's a case of removing the pin behind the fuse box and putting into a spare switched socket.

I have a universal socket panel which has a cigarette lighter and two USB ports, 1 is 1amp and 1 is 3 amp (I think) and this is going to live in the glove box. Might be an option, look on eBay there are a few different ones.
