This came on an ABD enigne out of a mk3 golf. We are putting a 5-speed on it

The gearbox code is CED

I always thought the later 4-speeds were all identical to the 8p's first 4 gears. But apparently not. Had a look on vagcat today and it seems to be similar to the 3+E fitted to formel E models

So here's what the gears are like on it

CED....................8P (AKY AKV CEN CEL are the 4-speed equivalents)
1st; 38/11 (3.45:1)....38/11 (3.45:1)
2nd; 46/25 (1.84:1)....47/24 (1.96:1)
3rd; 43/38 (1.13:1)....45/36 (1.25:1)
4th; 39/48 (0.81:1)....41/46 (0.89:1)
.......................37/50 (0.74:1) (5th)

The final drive on it is 64/15; (4.27:1) standard 1.05 final drive

It has the larger output flange on the offside so would only fit cars with the correspondingly short driveshaft (late mk3s) or if you swap the flange from an earlier box it'll fit anything.

So it will mean a few less revs on the motorway vs std mk2/3 4-speeds. The drop in revs at 70mph is between 170 and 370 rpm depending on which 4-speed you have (AKV/CEN is 370rpm, AKY/CEL is 170rpm)

It makes an even bigger difference if you have a mk1 with the 895 box; over 1000rpm less at 70!

The mileage I'm told is 80k. I've selected all the gears on it and everthing seems ok. The only problem is the upper gearbox mount - one of the studs has sheared off inside the casing so it will need extracting and replacing Turns out there's nothing with it. The stud must've come out with the nut and the hole was full of crap. Pic attached
