I thought that the mk3 golf centre console looked similar to the polo one so i found 1 at a friends farm by coisidence in a mk3 so i took it out as he scraps the cars and decided to give it a go.

it needed trimming abit on the cubby hole ( the top had to be cut off. shortened and some of the bottom trimmed.)

then it was a case of bolting it back in. and it goes all the way back to the rear seats!!

in my opinion looks much better and I'm pleased with the job I've done. :)

the bits in yellow are were the original plastic i cut away was.

Other than the trimming its just a case of bolting it in were the gear gaitor goes and at teh back were the ash tray is take that out and bolt the back down were the old handbrake slots went in.

Right: I had a go at this. But I've had to abort it because I ran into the following problems and I wondered whether you could help me:

1. The screws that bolted the console down under the gear gaitor aren't long enough to bolt the new one down once the new console is in place.

2. I couldn't get the bit around the handbrake in place because the seatbelt things are in the way. Did you take the seats out when you fitted this?

I'd appreciate any suggestions - much swearing has been uttered already.

i took the drivers seat out to get the front part in place yesh.

and about the screws being too short. mine were fine??

Oh. How do you get the driver's seat out? Is it a hard job, or just a few bolts?

I'll get some pics up when I get the chance - I think I know the cause of th problem. At the point where the front part joins to the back part, there's a plastic bit which sticks out downwards and looks like it bolts down in the Golf. This is too low, and I suspect this might be preventing the unit from reaching the screws in the gearlever well.

Presumably also all this tight fit makes it a complete arse if you want to adjust the handbrake?

Done this a very nice tidy job dosent take that long and quite easy to get right (if i can do it anybody can!!) heres a snap of mine :) centre console was £15 from a scrappy so wasnt a expensive one either

JJust done this today, messed it up a bit from not using a pencil or ruler, just kinda guessed and hacked away with a saw...

Diddnt cut away enough at the top under the main console so everything is pushed down tight, seems to have made it difficult to slot the handbrake piece together...

Then I got bored, soo looks a mess, will come back to it when i can be bothered :)

I've just done this mod today and it was a right pig haha, not hard graft just head scratchingly annoying! i had the same problem as 6Newan with the screws by the gear stick! but i cut some clip things under the cubby hole and as he suggested i cut away the bit that looks like it bolts down on a golf below wherethe front and rear bits join! i used a pekay (think thats the spelling but its one of those folded metal clips that you screw into) and 2 screws to attatch it to the rear it does look very nice if i do say so myself!

also had to cut a bit of a recess out of the cubby hole where the little bracket for the dash goes!

if i did it again id use a dremel and take a couple of mm at a time of and just keep going till it was exact as i now have about a 5mm gapabove the cubby hole and the dash!

Sorry to bring up a really old thread but has anyone done a conversion since? I'm keen to do it but I don't want to take seats off to find a rusty bolt snaps off in the proccess! Any advice?

The seats on a 6n come out by undoing a single bolt, unlikely it'll be rusty due to where it is.

It's at the front of the runner in the centre of the seat, unbolt it, remove bolt, slide the chair all the way back and it'll just pop straight out of the runners so you can lift it out of the car.

As far as I'm aware, the fronts are a straight swap, rears need the bases changing over, there's a guide here:
