  • Looks like my search is over. I've gone and bought myself a really well looked after car with 42K, full dealer service history including a replacement cam belt in May, a very nice after-market exhaust

I was in the same situation and managed to find an unmolested black 3door with 100k on it for £1300.

Bit rough around the edges but to be expected. More cosmetic than mechanical.

I spent months trawling ebay, gumtree, pistonheads, polo / vw forums and autotrader.

Finally found one in Preston. Fortunately I have a mate who lives there who took it for a spin and I gave him a checklist of stuff to look out for. He said it drove well, bit scruffy but all good.

I put the deposit down same day and did a 400 mile round trip to get it.

These do generate a massive amount of interest though so be quick is my advice. If i didn't put the deposit down someone else came with cash to buy it the following morning. he was not best pleased. The guy selling it was glad to see the back of it due to the huge amount of calls he was receiving.

Go see it asap, take a checklist and find the cars original dealer to see what services it has had, most importantly the gearbox and the pedal box. You can find this out by ringing any VW garage and give them the numberplate.

If it wasnt serviced by VW then they may not have this info.

Lovely little car. Puts a smile on my face every time.

Good luck!

Cheers for the info re: pedal box recall I'll bear it in mind if I ever find a car.

I'm starting to realise this is not going to be an easy, nor a quick process, being an incredibly impatient person the later could be a problem.

I'm also thinking I'm 5 years to late to the party, these things sure are few and far between, there are more cars being broken on eBay than there is for sale on Autotrader or pistonheads.

I've phone 2 cars today that only came up for sale over the last 2 days, the first was a Silver 3 door FSH 75K for sale on autorader at £1500 but it had already sold, The second was on gumtree again it was a Silver 3 door with FVWSH, 70K and for only £1050 and surprise-surprise it had also sold.

Look like I need to be quicker on the draw.

you can set up alerts on gumtree and ebay. they will email you as soon as an ad appears.

I think i was fairly lucky to be honest.

It was in Preston which is far enough away from major cities to be a pain to get to other than if you live locally.

I seen a few mint looking ones on ebay but they are close to £3k

THis one is still on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-VOLKSWAGEN-POLO-GTI-BLACK-/181520895223?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2a437d0cf7

if my one fell through i was going to go see that one.

This one might be worth considering, but in yorkshire. Only had coilovers, looks to be standard.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000-VOLKSWAGEN-POLO-GTI-/111459561224?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item19f381ef08

or this one.. black but is 5 door;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Polo-GTI-/321516436374?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4adbdf7b96

Central locking is piss to fix, cost be 40£ and took 5 mins to swap the pump. Is in kent and hell take £1200 for it.

GOGOGO!

I appreciate the leg work you've done there.

But out of all of those listed the 86,000 miler on Autotrader for £1695 is the only one I'd consider, but due to having a 8 day old little girl as well as a 22 month old boy means taking a day to travel to Cardiff to view/collect is not on the cards, If it's still available in a couple of weeks then I will go and have a look at it, but I very much doubt it will be.

As for the other, they all have to many miles on them for my liking. I know before anyone points out that there are plenty of cars still running well with over 140 - 150k on them I really don't want a car with much more than 80k.

My other thoughts when looking was that there are a lot of gti engines available with that kind of mileage and less, so if it does go they are fairly readily available. More so than than untouched cars with that mileage.

Ones with under 100k that were untouched i saw were all around the £3k mark.

The only downside is I cannot see any long term future for me on this forum as the car in question is a Renault sport Clio 172..... I'll get me coat :ninja:.
