Hey polo people. Just looking to hook up the horn in a mountney wheel i got on ebay. Can anyone advise on the wire i need? I looked at the wiring diagram in the back of the haynes and my brain went all itchy.

The wire is Brown/Blue to the horn from the horn button

Can i use pretty much any wire or does it have to have a specific value/be able to take a specific load?

I only need one wire, seems to have it's own built in earth.

The original wire is 1.0mm so any new wire needs to be of similar size.

The earth connection should be through the wheel/boss

There's a wee metal plate on the side of the horn button that i think acts as the earth. Or the wire i need is the earth and the metal plate completes the circuit to make it go beep.

Either way i still need that wire, i just needed to know what wire to get.

Kay. I just tried wiring this bitch up and it didn't work. I connected the wire from the back of the button, (in the picture above,) to the connection at the base of the boss. (Also in the picture.) If you look real close, you can see a little metal plate at about 8 o'clock on the back of the button. I'm assuming this completes the circuit.

Am i wiring it up correctly?

Have you tried connecting the connection in the boss to ground? this should sound the horn, if you have a multimeter do a continuity test between the wire from the centre of the horn push and the metal contact on the side of the push and when you push the button you should have continuity

I will try all of those. Don't need it fixed until june next year but it would be nice to get it done before then.

Just a thought, you did connect the original horn wiring to the new boss??

Original horn had two wires behind it. I "recycled" one of those when the new wheel and boss arrived to test the new horn. No joy.

I still have stock wheel, the horn button is knackered. I had to disconnect the wires inside because the horn was constantly sounding.

I took the stock button apart to see if i could do anything with it but i had no joy with that either. Still a massive newb to be honest so i was probly doing it wrong anyway.

The wire to the horn is a Brown with a Blue stripe, flash that to chassis an the horn should sound

Ordered wire over the phone with AES. Chap i spoke to said the wire he recommended would be fine for the horn. Said i didn't care about the colour as i wouldn't be able to see it anyway.

I'm assuming that the little bit in the bottom of the boss is meant to create the connection to the chassis. Either that isn't connecting or there's something wrong inside the switch. How would i go about testing the switch and the connection on the boss to see if they even work?

As I said if you find the original Brown/Blue wire and momentary touch that to chassis/ground it should make the horn sound

If you short the little tab in the boss to the centre nut, it should sound, if not then the metal finger behind the boss isn't contacting the ring on the boss. Take the wheel off and short the finger to the centre shaft, should go beep.

Also, I'm guessing the wheel has a clear coat over the shiny metal. Might be worth scratching away a little bit on the inside edge where the buttons side contact is as it may not be connecting.

I have seen many of these types of wheel before but this is the first with this type of side contact, I normally see two wires and I have to solder one of them to the boss body. Good idea really
